Frustrating Pre-Op PCP Visit

Recommended Posts

I am just a few week away from my surgery date, 9/29/21. Today was my pre-op visit with my primary to get the scripts for the lab work and chest x-ray. She decides to NOW mention that maybe I should postpone and try using Ozempic/Wegovy for weight loss,....wait, what?! She first said that the sleeve would be a great idea for me, recommended one surgeon but I decided on someone else.

Has anyone used these meds and had any success?. I looked up Wegovy which is the higher dose of Ozempic for weight loss. Insurance won’t cover it. They would cover some of Ozempic but still super expensive and the medical code for Diabetes would be used for the claim and I am not diabetic. I left that appointment so disillusioned, she has already approved the surgery but to mention the medication now is too little, too late for me. I am mentally ready to do this. I was trying to avoid getting on any long term prescriptions just for weight loss and not to mention side effects include pancreatitis and a slew of other things. So frustrated and a bit down today after the visit. 🙁

that's weird. If it were me, I'd think the same as you - too little, too late. Is she still willing to prescribe the scripts? If not, I'd contact the surgeon - they'll probably be willing to do it (in fact, I'm pretty sure the bariatric clinic prescribed all my pre- and post-surgery scripts)

I agree with catwoman, my surgeon and his NP were the ones to order all my labs and tests. I bet they would be willing to do the orders if you explain the circumstances.

She did give me all the paperwork I needed. It’s just annoying that she first was for surgery and now just decides to put doubts in my mind about it 🙉

Ooh good. Glad you got what you needed. That is weird for her to do that but I’d just put it behind me. You have a solid plan and your almost there.

Those meds do initially usually have pretty good weight loss, but from my own experience and the experience of others I've followed on a forum, the effectiveness usually diminished between 2 to 3 months. It wasn't working for me after the third month, and I had terrible side effects like really bad gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
