Tobin1260 0 Posted September 6, 2021 I had my gastric bypass revision on August 26, 2021 which was 3 days before Cat 4 Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans. I live just outside of New Orleans. Due to the hurricane, for several days, it was impossible to buy the food I needed. Everything was sold out. And Amazon isn’t able to deliver packages due to damages. Also I gained 12 lbs. following my surgery. I have not cheated on the diet and I’m hoping it’s Fluid buildup. I have left my nutritionist many voice mails starting August 30. I have also left voice messages for my doctor. I haven’t heard from either one of them. Also when I was discharged, the nutritionist gave me a 5 page hand out. She didn’t explain anything. On the hand out it says what food I can eat but there is no mention of the amount. Is it a cup of bouillon or 3 tablespoons of bullion? I have no idea. Thanks for listening. ShoppGirl 4,973 Posted September 6, 2021 (edited) I live in south florida so I can imagine what your going through. Can you find ramen noodles or other Soups and just strain them and use the broth? I was not given quantity limits on the liquid stage either. Edited September 6, 2021 by ShoppGirl
Dave In Houston 199 Posted September 6, 2021 (edited) You're in a miserable situation for sure. I hope you and your family and friends came through the storm OK. I was on liquids for a week, then moved to puree stage. Some docs like their patients to stay longer on liquids. During the liquid phase, you can have Protein Drinks, thin cream of wheat, Greek yogurt, strained/blended Soups, things like that. I would eat/drink slowly and stick to half a cup or so. It will take a while to learn what "full" feels like, but pay attention to the slightest feeling of fullness, and don't eat even a couple bites more, or you will regret it. During the puree phase, you can eat things that are blended to the consistency of applesauce. At that stage, I was grinding up dishes like chicken marsala or chicken curry and thinning them with a little chicken broth to get the right consistency. I would also grind Soup and add chicken to get the right consistency and also add some Protein. My doc said I could have soft fish and scrambled eggs during the puree phase if I chewed them well. One of my first mistakes, though, was trying to eat one egg and one egg white scrambled. It was too much and I didn't know to stop. If you have protein drinks, you can probably exist on those for a while. It will also help if you have power to run a blender. We could probably offer suggestions if you tell us what you have on hand and whether you have power or not. In Houston, Ike was a bad storm for us. I can't imagine how it would have been if I'd been recovering from bariatric surgery at the same time. Crick 145 Posted September 6, 2021 Keep in mind, that isn’t a real gain - your body just went through a major trauma. I “gained” 10 lbs 3 days post-op. It came off, and then some. They pump you full of fluids when you are hospitalized and your body is trying to adjust. I was on liquids for a week, then purée for 2 weeks. I would stick with strained Soups and Protein drinks and Greek yogurt. I would suggest starting with a quarter cup and see how it goes. Eat that very slowly and stay off the scale for a few weeks. Also, be sure to drink your Water. 3 FutureSylph, Sunnyway and Dave In Houston reacted to this
catwoman7 11,220 Posted September 7, 2021 if that 12 lb gain was when you left the hospital, it's from the IV fluids. It's basically salt Water, so it takes a few days to work its way out of your system. a cup of bouillon shouldn't be a problem - it has hardly any calories in it, and it's a liquid. Tomo 1,194 Posted September 7, 2021 (edited) I gained 10 lbs. from surgery weigh in and when I left hospital the next day to go home. They pump a lot of fluids in you. Candace76 212 Posted September 9, 2021 Hi, I am so sorry to hear that you are having a difficult start to your recovery due to Ida. Hoping you & your loved ones are all ok. I found this website with a meal plan that looks similar to mine as well as many others I have seen online. The link below will tell you more about what to eat during the different phases. You can also do searches for other examples. Most advise 64 ounces of liquids & Protein daily, but that goal may be hard to reach those first few weeks. We're you given Vitamin recommendations? Those are also part of the follow-up plan. Wishing you well with your recovery from surgery & Ida.
