Not feeling restriction with soft food

Recommended Posts

I'm just over two weeks out from surgery and started soft foods yesterday (my program doesn't have purees). I was excited to start eating again but I'm not feeling the fullness I expected. My portions have been about 1/4 cup of cottage cheese or refried Beans etc, and last night I had a 1/2 cup of turkey chili. I don't have trouble tolerating it but I feel exactly the same before and after eating--not hungry but not full either. Is this just because everything is still healing? I've been able to drink Water in bigger sips than I expected too (not on purpose!) so I have this irrational thought that the surgeon screwed up.

You will begin to feel it as you move to more solid foods. For now, don't go over the amounts your program recommends.

Great answer. We shouldn't even be looking for the restriction. If we are following the protocol, we won't get to that point.

Thank you! My program says 1/4 - 1/2 cup per meal so I'm on track but had just expected to feel *something* at some point if that makes sense!

Agree you won’t feel as much restriction with puréed and soft foods.

nope -- you won't feel restriction until you start eating solid foods again. For one thing, things like purees move through your pouch pretty quickly. And secondly, you had some nerves cut during surgery, and it takes awhile for them to regenerate. By the time you get the go-ahead to move to solid foods, you should start feeling some restriction

also, for future reference, feeling "full" might feel differently now than it did pre-surgery. I don't feel full like I used to. Instead, I feel this pressure or discomfort in my chest and I know if I don't quit eating, I'm going to be sorry. I've read about others who have kind of weird "full cues" like a runny nose or sneezing. Of course, you may have the same full cues that you did before, but just so you know, they might be different. If they're different, it can awhile to figure out what they are.

but anyway, to circle back - completely normal to not feel "full" or restriction right now. It'll come back pretty quickly, though. For now, just measure out what your plan says to eat and stick to that.

I felt EXACTLY the same way. Now that I'm transitioning into soft foods, you will feel it as others have said. By the time we get solids... It will be on! lol

Cheers!

You may not feel restriction with the portions you are expected to be eating. For some reason I could eat more than expected at any given stage if I wanted. I did feel restriction just not as soon as expected. I am almost 6 months out now I COULD eat quite a bit more than I am supposed to. I think this is uncommon and the other responses are far more likely but even if it’s the case I just stick to measuring out what i should be eating and I am losing weight just the same.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
