Post-Op diet

Recommended Posts

So, Ive been reading..and it looks like all of us have different rules for the post-op diet, from our physicians.

I have to be on a CLEAR liquid diet for 4 weeks, following my surgery. That includes 60g of Protein Shakes a day.

doesnt that seem a bit..strict to you?

Thoughts?

My pre-op was 2 weeks of liquids, my post op is 3 days clear liquids, 10 days full lipuids (meaning I can have strained Soups and shakes), 2 weeks mushies. Then I go in for a fill and have at least 1 week of liquids again. So in total I will be on liquids for 5 out of 7 weeks.

I just keep telling myself that it will all be worth it when my DH says something flattering for the first time.

I guess my doctor must be strict because when he said 4 weeks of liquids after surgery I think he meant only liquids no mushies... I am all aboard if it makes me lose the weight - it will suck but it will not suck as bad of being overweight!

Every Dr seems to have different ideas - would really be nice if they could all agree for a change:D

The purpose of the liquid is not to lose weight but to give time for your stomach to heal after the op and so that you don't stretch your new little pouch. If you start eating too soon your stomach won't heal as quickly and this could possibly lead to complications later. So best follow whatever your Dr says.

Mine said 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushies, but I went for my post-op check up yesterday and the swelling and incisions were healing so well that I was told I could start with sloppy mushies.:hungry:

I was banded on November 14, 2007 and I am doing well. I am finally on solids and watching carefully what I eat until my 1st fill. I know I don't have restriction so I am paying close attention to what I eat and I have started walking. Since preop I have lost about 22 pounds and can't wait to my first fill so I can get restriction and really start to see some changes. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This board is very valuable and although I don't post often, everytime I need answers I read the post out here. So, thanks to all of my new family here at lapbandtalk.

2 days Pre-Op: Liquids (wasn't hard, wasn't eating much anyway.. haven't ever)

Surgery 12/13/07: Had ice chips until midnight that night

12/14/07: Barium/Swallow study: Had broth and Jello afterward.

Week 1: Liquids (broth, cream Soups, jello, sf pudding, sf popcicles, apple sauce, etc) My Doc doesn't care for Protein Shakes, especially since I'm lactose intolerant. I can do yogurt and have gotten the Dannon Danimals strawberry Explosion smoothies (the kids have a TON less sugar than the adult portion) I can have 2 oz at a time.

Weeks 2-4: pureed foods

Week 4+: Small portions of regular foods

I think some of the terminology people are using is confusing. Protein Shakes are not clear liquid. Clear Liquids are broth, Water, tea, sugar free popcicles and stuff like that. My Doctor said clear liquids for two days and then pourable food such as Protein shakes or non-fat milk for the rest of the week. At week two I can have very soft food such as yogurt, very thin mashed potatoes, blended Soups with no lumps, very thin hot Cereal and of course protein shakes. At week four I can start with foods blended in food processor into fine chunks and go from there to see what I can tollerate. I will get my first fill 5-6 weeks after surgery. My Doctor is part of Western Barriatric group in Reno and they specialize in Bariatric surgery. They are a Barriatric Center of Excellence so they are very thorough.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
