First Fill...and I can eat MORE!?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on the 15th, and just had my first fill on Thursday...and I feel nothing!!! I was really struggling before I went in for the fill, hoping that I would get at least some restriction, but I feel like I can eat even more now! My doc put me on liquids for the first day with soft to solids on the next. I have been trying to be strict by eating my Protein first - but I am definitly eating more than a cup of food at a time.

Should I go back to my surgeon and get another fill this week? My second fill is the end of January, and I am afraid that I will not lose weight if I wait until then for the next fill. What do you guys think?:help:

Yes, go back in for another fill. How long does your doctor make you wait in between fills? Mine makes you wait 2 weeks. FYI. It took me 5 fills and about 6 months before I felt real restriction. Good luck.

NP 1978:

Me too -I was banded on 10/29 and had my first fill on Friday. I have a call into my surgeons office to see if anything can be done. I got 3 cc's and he said the band holds 10-15. Have to see what happens

I agree with Julie G. I would go back and don't be shy. It also took me about 4-5 adjustments to get to a good spot I could live with.

I was banded on 10/22 and had my first fill on 11/4. 2 weeks after the surgery I lost 11 lbs...which is great! However now that I am eating regular foods I feel like I can eat way too much, I'm never full. I thought after having the fill things would get better but they aren't. I don't go back for 6 weeks for the next fill. My doctor wants me to come back every 4 weeks for the next fill but because of the holidays I can't get in for 6 weeks. Starting to get frustrated, feeling like I'm over eating and eating all the wrong foods. I am now down a total of 15 lbs but have so much more to go. Is this normal?? I'm concerned and frustrated!!! :help:

Jennifer, what you are experiencing is totally normal. It took me 5 fills and 6 months to finally have good restriction. You will get there, it just takes time.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
