Has anyone flown after surgery? I’ll be attending a wedding 2 and a half weeks after surgery and wanted to know if anyone has any tips. Thanks!

Many people fly to another country, have surgery and fly home typically two days later without issue. TSA does allow you to bring medically necessary drinks in “reasonable” quantities so just have a note from a doctor if you want to bring specific drinks and not rely on what’s available in the airport. You don’t NEED a note but it will help, but you DO need to tell tsa at the check point. Other than that at two weeks unless you have a problem beyond what’s considered normal healing you’ll be fine. Bring whatever comforts you think you’ll need, a travel pillow, blanket etc.

I flew to another country to have my Gastric Sleeve done, I has it done on the Saturday morning and flew home on Tuesday morning. I had 2 connecting flights and a total of 14 hours travel time, all was ok just very tiring and uncomfortable. I booked special assistance to take me from the check in desk to the plane and also help me off which was great. I would also suggest taking a pillow/cushion for the plane, wether that is to prop behind the base of your back to support stomach or as I used it quite a lot for, to hold against my incisions whilst coughing due to the air conditioning on board. Overall it wasn't the worst experience and definitely doable.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
