I am allowed to have broth, and I’m allowed to have non starchy vegetables… So is cabbage Soup ok? I am on day 4 of my liver shrink diet and looking for some variety. 🙂

Broths are the liquid from Soups made of vegetables & meat. If you strain the cabbage Soup you’d be having broth but if you’re allowed non starchy vegetables you should be fine to eat it unstrained.

There are stacks of non starchy vegetables you can eat: salad greens, tomatoes, green Beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, capsicum, … Can you have eggs? Make some omelettes. Make a Pasta dish using zucchini noodles & the meat & vegetables you’re allowed.

Check with your dietician if you want to be sure.

Here's the Weight Loss Magic Soup I've been making. It's delicious, filling, and has only 57 calories per cup:

32 oz chicken stock
3 cups V-8 juice (you can use low-sodium V8 or even Tomato juice, homemade or store bought)
2 cans Italian diced tomatoes
1 small onion
2 cloves minced garlic
1 package sliced mushrooms
3 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 zucchini, diced
1 yellow squash, diced
2 cups fresh or frozen green beans
1 can kidney Beans, drained and rinsed
3-4 cups shredded cabbage
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Salt and Pepper, to taste

In a large frying pan sprayed with cooking spray, sauté garlic, onions, carrots, and mushrooms for about 5 minutes.

In a large crockpot, combine sautéed garlic and vegetables with the remaining ingredients. Cook on high for 2-3 hours, or until vegetables are cooked. (I have made this in a large stock pot on the stove instead of in a crock pot.)

This makes a large batch of Soup. If you would like to freeze portions of it to use later, undercook the vegetables just a little. Pour the soup into freezer Ziplock bags and let as much air out as you can. Lay the bags flat on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once the soup is frozen flat, it is easy to layer in your freezer and won't take up much room. To thaw, place the bag in the fridge for 24 hours and then reheat.

Wow thanks! This reminds me of the old WW Soup recipe that changed depending upon the season and veggies available. I can alter the veggies to suit my stomach and family. Yum

Absolutely, you can mix up the veggies to your own taste and with what is abundant. For example, I like canned "fire roasted" diced tomatoes or even fresh cherry or grape tomatoes. Two cups of this Soup is only 114 calories and very filling for even dinner. 57CDDD12-FF45-2B11-46E0-8FB7843ABA55-5772.thumb.jpeg.507c7301e6615f7db9c8d7007dbcad0a.jpeg

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
