How much can you eat after 4 months post op?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering what portion size people are eating around the half year mark since surgery. I am able to eat more then I thought I was going to be able to eat. Still about a cup of food at a time but maybe sometimes a little more then a cup. Is this supposed to be happening?

Hello!

I met with my Dietitian on Monday for my 3 month follow up. I have been able to eat about 1-1.5 cups of solid food since about 4 weeks. Obviously this depends on the type of day and food. But she assured me this was good and normal.

Hope that helps!

I was gonna say, I just hit 6 weeks post op a few days ago and have been on my regular food/diet stage for a little over a week now and yeah, depending on the food and whatnot I can easily eat a cup of food too in a sitting (sometimes a little more/little less).

In fact, FOR THE DAY, my diet plan says I should be getting in ROUGHLY (give or take a lil more or less depending on what I choose to eat and the SUGGESTED serving size for it) I should be eating 1 CUP of each a day: Protein, starch, veggies, dairy.........plus 2 servings of fruits and 2 servings (2 tbsp) of fats.

RIGHT NOW I of curse cannot eat all of that in a day. And I just had a call/checkup with my dietician on Wednesday and she said that will come in time and most likely closer to goal. But she was also happy with the amounts I have been eating and told me NOT to be afraid to eat a variety of foods.

There are lots of right answers to this question. Gender, age, type of surgery, level of activity, calories, type of food, etc. can influence what is an appropriate amount of food to eat. The goal should be to eat until you have had enough (need not want) & not until you are full. Sometimes by the time you’re full you’ve had too much.

As examples, at about 4 months I took three days to eat two scrambled eggs, about 2oz of Protein & 1/3-1/2 cup vegetable & about a cup of a meat & vegetable Soup.

Were you given any caloric goals? I was only just given the 1/4 cup starting portion size advice. But I clearly remember my surgeon drawing a picture of a small plate & then drawing two circles saying this is how much protein & how much vegetable I should work my way towards eating by maintenance. It was 3-4oz protein & about a cup of vegetables.

Best advice is to have a conversation with your dietician.

3.5 years out...I can eat about a cup at a time (and sometimes less) if it's a fibrous food that doesn't slide. If it's a slider, I can eat more...comfortably. Had about a cup and a half of thinned oatmeal this morning with pecans and blueberries...no problem. Last night I was eating steak and brocolli...and gave up at 3/4 of a cup.

If you're drinking with meals you will be able to eat a lot more than if you don't....which is one of the reasons we are told not to drink with meals.

I am a little over 4 months and I eat 4 oz of meat/ Protein and small amount of veggies ( 1/4 to 1/2 cup) for most meals. I measure everything out so that I don’t overeat. My protein is around 100g daily, calories come in between 1000-1200. ( Nut says don’t count calories but I see it on the app I use). If I go lower than that I seem to stall, but I am very active and go to gym.

My surgery was 5/6. And I too eat about a cup of food. Not salads though and I really can't stomach meat.< br>

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
