This is the worst decision I ever made I'm in agony I can't even keep Water down I'm miserable every time I try and sip Water i throw it back up the sad part is I know I'm going to become dehydrated I haven't had water since the surgery and I'm thirsty as hell

I was very badly swollen for the first few days & hardly drank anything either. And don’t get me started on trying to swallow the pain meds - ugh! I spent the first two days in hospital carrying a sick bag because I was constantly spitting up saliva. Silly thing was I sort of felt ok just pain on swallowing & the saliva. On day three my back went to spasm from the tension I was apparently holding in my body. By day four it improved dramatically. Didn’t even need pain meds. The swelling reduced, the tension reduced & I wasn’t bringing up saliva. It will get better. Just take it slowly. As I said warm drinks were easier to sip - warm water, green or herbal teas, Soups, were easier to sip & more soothing.

I’m glad you’re going to get some iv fluids.

Good luck.

I had DS. I’m 11 days post op.

the first two days I was throwing up old blood, which is normal. I had the nurses give me those chuck bags to throw up in. I didn’t really “drink”. I ate ice cubes, slept at a recline on a couch (legs propped up), walked around my hotel room, used the bathroom a lot, and just slept! Take your nausea meds and pain killer. It helps!
Try to stay positive and think about how healthy you’re becoming or what you want to do when you lose x amount of weight.

On day 3 of post op, my dr prescheduled 2 IV bags. They were very helpful! That night I was able to sip 2 oz of broth or Soup an hour and have an ice cube. Now I can drink about 10 Oz of Bone Broth in an hour or two. I recommend getting Swanson bone broth sipping cups. So yummy after all the sweets drinks. I dislike all these Protein Drinks and my stomach gets so bloated from them. So I mix a scoop of unflavored whey Protein in my Greek yogurts. I’m still struggling to get the recommended amount of protein and Water in. But I feel better now that I’m getting at least 40 Oz of water plus some liquid foods.

I walk about 2 miles a day. Sometimes one mile in the AM and a mile in the PM. I always sip water, and I mean tiny sips, thru my walks.

One thing I highly wish my DR told me was to use benefiber or Miralax pre op and post op. I was constipated these last few weeks! Im talking pebbles type of BM after 2 WLS of nothing. Ive been mixing miralax in my morning tea and used fleet suppositories and that has been helping me finally. But goodness, I wish I was on benefiber preop.

Also, I’ve taken gas-x three times since surgery and it has helped! Hallelujah!

I hope you feel better quickly!

Hi everyone ! I just had my surgery on July 2nd so today I’m 3 days post op. I have a lot of trouble drinking my liquids. I sip slowly and wait to drink a second sip but it always gets stuck in my chest/throat and it hurts. Also I feel super full after 2 sips, even with Water. It’s my first day out of the hospital and I’m supposed to drink 1.5l of Fluid but it seems impossible. What can I do???

Yes, it gets better! In the beginning I remember having a lineup of medicine cups with 1oz of Fluid, and drinking one every 5-15 minutes. 5 weeks out, I can drink a cup of Water in about 10-15 minutes. If water isn't going down well, try and see if something like herbal tea works better. I find warm fluids go down the easiest. Everyone is different.

one thing a nurse told me which could help you is to let the Water slide down the back of your throat the first few days instead of swallowing, i personally found this tedious very fast but when i did do it it did work. the first few days to a week are THE WORST trying to get in water, just do your best it will become easier i am now three weeks post op and drinking water is a breeze whereas the day i was discharged I was having so much chest pain I actually thought I was having a heart attack and was going to die while I was in a hotel room all by myself, I survived and so will you! it gets worse before it gets better and you can see from so many positive messages that it does get better! xxx

Oh, and just to add, its winter here for me so Water is cold! I am making different sugar free herbal teas at a warm temperature, they go down much easier for me than cold water

Kiora! I also find it easier to drink teas or warm drinks. The cold Protein Shakes do not sit well with me and I have decided not to force myself to drink them if I can get my Protein from food. Thanks for the tips!

The first 2 weeks after my Loop DS I wondered why I'd done it to myself. I also threw up the first few days and had to stay in the hospital for 4 nights. I never had much pain, except when swallowing, but the nausea was miserable. It was hard to sip and keep anything down and once I went to Protein Shakes they were disgusting and I regretted my decision to have surgery. I'm happy to say it got better and now I'm a year post op and it was the best decision I ever made! Now I can drink a whole glass of Water in a few minutes without a problem.

You may need a medication called zofran for the nausea. It really helped me in the early stages. The pain medicines caused nausea and vomiting.

Btw, before surgery I was guzzling a gallon a day. Ithink my body is noticing the huge difference.

I was same, I was doing at least 2 litres Water before.. I’m lucky to get around 1ltr and the constipation’s awful 🤦‍♀️ but I’m hoping when I build Water back up.. that’ll stop .. wwe can only keep going 👍

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
