Ideas for purée and soft food diet

Recommended Posts

Hello I was seeing if anyone had any ideas for a purée food or soft food diet? I’m 2 weeks removed from surgery and am looking for ideas. Also would grilled pulled chicken be ok to eat vs purée meat? Thank you

I ate chili, fat free refried Beans with a tablespoon of light sour cream/shredded cheddar/guacamole mixed in, mashed potatoes, different Soups blended down, the ricotta bake, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, etc.(my puree stage only lasted a week so I quickly moved on to soft foods) On soft foods I could eat all of that plus, chicken, ground turkey, lunchmeat, eggs, tuna, salmon, any flaky/soft fish, green beans, fruit cups (no sugar added), steamed carrots, well cooked veggies, cream soups, cooked oatmeal, applesauce, etc.

All that sounds delicious right now!

Puréed foods should be puréed & sloppy so they are easy to swallow & digest (less strain on your healing tummy). Think baby food (I actually bought a couple of soft packs of baby food). I used stock & diluted gravy to purée minced meats. I ate lots of Soup & milky scrambled eggs too. Puréed salmon & tuna, cottage & ricotta cheese was disgusting. It was only two weeks so it didn’t matter I had a few option I could eat.

Pulled meats should be ok in the soft stage but make sure they’re still pretty moist. (Some people struggle with chicken breast cause it’s natural dry - try thigh meat instead.)

I have been on Purees going on my 7th week now and I am eating mostly Soups. I feel like it gives me the most variety. I also have tried the ricotta bake, seemingly carrots then running them through the food processor you can season them however you want. I recently bought some "black beam burgers" by Gardein and threw them in the food processor with some avocado oil and veg broth for moisture and they were pretty good, and different. [emoji16]

chicken can be pretty hard for a lot of us early on. Agree with @Arabesque about purée with liquid or some sort of moisture for best results. Take it really slow, too. When things don’t sit well, it can be a very miserable experience and you can hurt yourself this early out. Good luck! 😊

I first tried chicken in pureed stage and ate it all through soft food with no issue. Thank goodness because chicken (boneless, skinless) breasts and fish, shrimp, etc are really my main source of meat/protein that I eat. I don't care for beef, pork, etc.

I remember when I had dietician "homework" when I was preparing for surgery and one of the questions was "What is one worry you think you'll have about your diet after surgery?" I put down I worry I won't be able to eat chicken (based on what I've read here). And I told her I worried about it because chicken is what I eat the most. She laughed about it and said most people don't have issues with it once they try cooking it in other ways that keep it moist.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
