VSG revision to Bypass 5/27/21

Recommended Posts

I had a VSG in 2015 and had gained almost all of the weight back. On May 27th I had a revision to a gastric bypass. I'm about 3 weeks out and this stitch pain is no joke! I can barely bend or walk at times. Aside from that and unlike my VSG, I feel great. So much so that I feel as though this will not work for me. Nothing is making me sick, I feel like I can eat without issues. I lost 21 pounds the first 2 weeks, now this week I've gained. I'm starting to feel like this will fail like the last time.

What would you think of seeing a bariatric therapist? Sounds like the first time you didn't get your disordered eating issues resolved.....but maybe you can this time around with some help? Wishing you the best.

Because you feel great you think it won't work? I don't know if you had it or not when you had your VSG but now they do nerve blocks with the surgeries to block the pain. That could be the difference between then and now. I had absolutely no pain with my gastric bypass and felt great after the initial first few days of feeling tired from anesthesia.

I'm not sure which part of this is making you feel you it won't work. I may be reading this incorrectly, but it sounds like you think that because you've had no issues with this surgery. I never did either - no pain, no sickness, no issues. At first I was worried the surgeon didn't actually do the surgery! But he did it - and it definitely worked!

I also agree with creekimp that if you might consider seeing a therapist if your disordered eating issues continue, as that could sabotage your results. Nothing wrong with working with a therapist - lots of WLS patients do.

@catwoman7 I actually told my physician the same thing! I asked if he really did the surgery because I felt so good afterwards (aside from the stitch pulling pain now).

@Lynnlovesthebeach I guess because I felt so horrible after the VSG and could barely keep anything down, I expected worse for the bypass. When seeing my new physician for the bypass he actually found that the VSG was not done correctly in the first place and that's probably why I had such trouble afterwards.

@Creekimp13 I do see a therapist. I think I will always struggle with weight/eating issues regardless. Work in progress!

Did you have revision because of regain or gerd? I don’t have any issues except regain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
