Eating while board...please help

Recommended Posts

Since this surgery I have noticed that I have a lot of head hunger when anxious or stressed out but also when I am board. I do have an appointment scheduled with a therapist who specializes in disordered eating but It is not until the end of July. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or information about how to deal with this now.

For boredom eating (or any type of emotional eating) I find distraction works well for me. Fine something else to do with your hands and/or mind. Knitting, arts and craft, go for a walk, put on some music and exercise or dance, call a friend or family member, puzzles etc etc. If you are easily distracted it won't take long but generally 15 to 30 minutes works well for me.

Before surgery, I often boredom ate on weekends. I’d get all my chores done in the morning & then nibble to fill in time in the afternoon. It can be a hard habit to break.

Finding something to occupy your mind or distract you for a while as @Hopscotch suggested does help. I’ll read. Watch a documentary. Play a game on my iPad. Check my social media. I also ask myself why do I want to eat? Am I really hungry? I also make myself wait 15 to 30 minutes &/or have something to drink to break the desire for something to eat.

I'm a "bored" eater as well. Being trapped in my house during the worst of the pandemic was a challenge. Sometimes I just have to leave the house to get my mind away from food!

I have this problem too. I find getting into a computer game helps me.

Yes, I eat when I am bored too... If I don't have plans on the weekends I often end up napping a lot or listening to podcasts on days like today when it's too hot to go outside. I will also call people to chat (like my mom or best friend), or go mall walking, use the treadmill, come on this website, plan a healthy meal to cook, clean up/put things away, etc.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Idk how I would be doing all this without the support of everyone here.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
