Brown vaginal discharge after gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to have a thick brown vaginal discharge after surgery? Had my period two weeks before surgery.

Likely just a yeast infection, one dose of Diflucan is likely the treatment.

Yeah, but I have no pain accompanied by it. I looked it up and a yeast infection discharge is white in color so I don't think that's it.

Might be “spotting” due to hormonal shifts post-op. Check in with your PCP.

screwed-up hormones is a common complaint during the first weeks or months after surgery. A lot of women report screwed-up cycles, mood swings, etc. It eventually stabilizes. I'd guess it may be due to this -- but you might want to run it by your doctor just in case.

I haven't had surgery yet, so can't speak to that exactly. That being said, I have experienced spotting (usually dried blood which is thick and brown) when I've lost a lot of weight quickly in the past. I'm on Mirena so I don't get periods at all, which means the spotting came as a surprise. I was advised it's very normal when losing larger amounts of weight. If you're worried definitely phone your doctor though!

I have had breakthrough bleeding on and off ever since my surgery. Slowing down now at 12 weeks out. Could it be this?

I had this happen on Keto in the past. 3 week long period due to fat loss. It has something to do with excess estrogen which tends to be stored in fat cells. I have only had 1 cycle post op and it was more normal than it's been in years. I totally agree it's likely hormonal and should calm down.

I'm going to echo what others have said. Any major surgery can cause hormone disruption and make your cycle off for a while. This sounds like some breakthrough bleeding. As long as it's not accompanied with pain or a foul odor, I'm sure you're just fine.

I have PCOS so my menstrual cycle was majorly screwed up before surgery. After surgery, I've had some crazy periods, but also a super normal and healthy one. This was one of the major reasons I decided on the surgery in the first place. The SADI-s (modified DS) will help resolve my PCOS.

If it persists, it would still be a good idea to see your PCP or OBGYN!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
