Question about nicotine test on surgery day...

Recommended Posts

Hello there! I am Jayla and new here. Age 34, 5'3 Hw 392 CW 290

I have roux en y surgery on June 3rd. After a ton of set backs 3 years of work to get surgery I am finally approved and getting surgery in 3 days.

Long story sorry!

I quit smoking for 2 years before trying to get surgery back in 2019 then lost my insurance and got delayed. After getting back into program in January of 2020 I started smoking during covid when I got a divorce. I quit 10 days before my nicotine test and surgeon meeting etc for insurance approval all went great....

Well... my surgery got delayed again do to the prior authorization team not sending things correctly and requiring an appeal and resubmisson again. Delayed another 4 months until June 3rd. I started smoking again after having a child like idiot temper tantrum moment when this happened. Not my finest decision obviously I know that. I know smoking is bad and bad for surgery.

Last detail is that I have asthma and super allergies in the spring and fall that make me have very bad post nasal drip and mucus. I normally go on prednisone to help... well cannot take them anymore... and if you don't know quitting smoking creates even more of this post nasal drip... resulting in tight tubed and feeling of drowning so I was struggling to immediately quit again.

At my pre-op exam the doctor conversed with my pcp on a plan to have me quit smoking 2 days before surgery on a cut down regimine while taking antihistamines and said it should be fine.

My surgeon of course did not want me on any nicotine for a few weeks prior to surgery. I am worried he will cancel on surgery day even if this was advised by my pcp and pre-surgical exam doctor.

Has anyone ever passed the first nicotine test but failed on surgery day? What happened?

Do they always again test on surgery day? Is it a blood or urine test?

Any tips for passing or how to handle this?

Thank you all for your time and consideration. I really would rather not postpone due to a flub on my part when I have been so successful in my journey already.

my nicotine test was a blood test. I can't remember if I had a second one the day of surgery or not (it's been a few years), although I quit smoking many years ago, so it wasn't really an issue for me...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
