So I am almost 12 weeks post op and have lost 40 pounds so far. I have been waking up with a slightly stiff back the past few days and I’m wondering if the memory foam mattress that has a larger body impression is causing my back problems?? Has anyone else had similar issues??

I can tell you a large body impression can cause back problems. Our last few mattresses did not hold up to our weight. My husband is 6'10" and a big guy and when I was almost 400 pounds none of our mattresses lasted more than 2 years without getting large body impressions and we both had back pain.
We bought a Big Fig mattress a couple years ago. It's is made for bigger people and it's has been amazing. There are no body impressions even on my husband's side.
A good mattress definitely makes a difference!

We had a lot of issues with our mattresses over the years. Both of us were overweight which caused us to basically buy a new one every couple of years. The last one we bought, we spent a good amount of money on it. It's called posturepedic and its awesome.

We bought a sleep number in Feb 2020. The best bed I’ve ever owned. I’ve noticed I need a lower number as I lose weight.

Oh that's the one that hubby said we are getting next.

Seriously recommend a split king with adjustable bases. We’ve been married for 16 years and sleeping in my “own” bed was a game changer. We sleep sooo much better. No issues on the marital activities :)

I own a purple mattress and bought it in August of 2016. Even at our heaviest weight we never had a body impression and the bed doesn't need to be rotated. We bought this bed due to my wife's back injury and this bed has significantly improved our sleep. Even after losing all of this weight we still find the bed just as comfortable as it was before!

I always wondered about the purple mattress.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I already have adjustable bases and thought memory foam was my only option to put on top. I will look into the other mattresses mentioned though because my husband agreed it’s time to invest in good mattresses.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
