Newly Banded "what Can I Eat"

Recommended Posts

:glassesI WAS BANDED ON 12-6-07 AND I WAS TOLD I CAN ONLY HAVE Clear liquids BUT I KEEP SEEING ON DIFFERENT THREADS THAT PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROTIEN shakes RIGHT AFTER SURGERY.

ALSO I TAKE DIABETES MEDICATION THAT I AM AFRAID TO TAKE. I HAD SO MUCH INFORMATION TO TAKE IN THAT I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE DR SAID ABOUT TAKING THOSE MEDS.

Please, please, please, PLEASE call your doctor's office! They understand that it's a lot of info to take in and they know that some folks will have questions. It is ESPECIALLY important to call to find out about your medication. Call tomorrow, I know it's Sunday, but there should be an answering service that can get in contact with the doc so that you know about your meds, at the very least.

Did you get a folder or binder with nutritional info in it? Did your discharge instructions say anything on them about what you should be eating/drinking now?

I know this is VERY confusing because so many folks have different plans for food after surgery, the MOST important thing is to follow YOUR doc's instructions. NOT ANYONE ELSE'S. Perhaps post who your doc is and someone out here will have had her/him and can help.

If your doc says to only be on clears for now, then you are to ONLY be on CLEARS (see through it) for now. It doesn't matter if someone else can have a Protein shake, if your doc wanted you to have them, he probably would have told you so.

There are some clear drinks with Protein in them. The protein isn't the best quality, but it will help with the feeling of fullness. They are the little bullets or the bottles of Isopure. You can get them at GNC or just about any place that sells sports nutrition supps. Rite Aid carries a line of things from GNC and I've seen the clear liquid Protein Drinks. Special K Protein Water is clear and has a *little* protein in it. That's better than nothing right now.

Call your doctor! Does not matter what anybody on a message board says. Your doctor was the one that rearranged your insides - don't be afraid to call his/her office!

ETA - I hope that didn't come across as me disagreeing with you, FaithMD. I'm not at all. I hadn't even read your second post when I wrote what I wrote. LOL Then I read what you wrote about the clear Protein and I fully agree with the fullness factor and you made some great suggestions. And following THOSE recommendations does not go against the clear liquid diet requirement given by her doctor. Just wanted to clear that up.

I was on clear liquids for three days after surgery and then full liquids for 7 days and onto soft diet or mushies for three weeks.

Every DR is different, so you should follow your DR's orders first and formost. It is important to keep most food out of the pouch so it can heal and I believe that is why they do these types of diets. It will also give you a jump on your weightloss. It also helps in learning to eat the small portions.

I had clear liquids only for the first day after surgery and then full liquids for FOUR WEEKS. :P I have more than 2 weeks left and already wish it was over.

Every doctor is different. I'm always surprised when people post that they don't know what they are supposed to be eating following surgery. I would think that you'd have some kind of class or nutritional appointment or at least some printed material of some kind.

No worries, Steph. I didn't think you were disagreeing at all. I was just emphasizing the need to follow your own doc's advice. You made/make good points.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
