No that does not sound normal. You need to call your Dr. office.

Always call your medical team if something is causing you pain or is not usual for you.

In saying that it could be swelling from the surgery. A lot of us do experience difficulty &/or discomfort when swallowing to begin due to the swelling at the top of the tummy & esophagus. It does get better over a few days as the swelling reduces but do contact your surgeon to be sure.

I agree with the advice to consult your surgeon, but what you are describing is very common. I referred to it as a "cramp", some people call it a "pinch".

For me, it would hit about two seconds after taking a sip...one one-thousand, two one-thousand, CRAMP. It lasted a while for me, it went away in week 3.

Definitely run it by your surgeon just in case, but don't stress too much, a lot of us have been through it. Hope you feel better soon!

Edit:

Just to help you feel better, I did a quick search and found a few examples of other people who had that pain after drinking:

It's super common, but worth mentioning to your surgeon.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
