Stomach Flu & the band?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I just spent my evening yesterday in the Urgent Care battling severe nausea & bouts of dry heaving (nothing inside to give). My question relates to vomiting with the band.

When I came home early from work yesterday, I took meds given by the surgeon for nausea & vomiting that I received post surgery. Those lasted about 1-2 hr. (was supposed to be a 12 hr. dose). After that, the dry heaving started and that reallyhurt, so I was afraid I would do something to the band. After going the "on call" merry go round with the Dr. office, I went to the UC.

Now...any advice for the future? I was given Zofran (AWESOME stuff) but I would like to know if there is something I can do as better preparation for the nausea & vomiting that comes with the flu.

Thanks,

Annette

I am not sure if there is anything you can do, other than the zofran if you have the flu. I know I always have some just in case, and it works wonderfully.

I have wondered this same thing. My doc won't give out meds UNTIL I'm actually vomitting. I don't get this. Is zofran something you can get over the counter?

Zofran is prescription only. My doctor has an ongoing prescription for me. I seldom use it, but it is nice to know I have it when I need it to protect my band.

Yeah, the Dr. at the Urgent Care gave me a scrip to use when needed. I figured I would call my regular dr. on Monday to give him a little update to ensure that it was in my chart as an item that worked VERY well for the heaving/vomiting.

I had a scrip from the surgeon that only lasted for about 1-2 hrs. (supposed to have lasted for 12 hrs. before next dose) So, since zofran worked so well, I would like to keep it as my known med for this little problem.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
