HELP! Were/Are you a foodie pre-surgery (or post)? Husband very worried!

I have been struggling with the same issue when trying to decide whether to WLS or not. I and my husband are most definitely foodies; we love experiencing new restaurants, trying tasting menus with wine pairings, etc. I love cooking and am also currently participating in a wine course. I'm trying to convince myself that after I'm able to eat "normal foods" the only thing that will change is the amount of food I eat and me making healthier choices, Remains to be seen whether this is really the case.

This is what I envision life after surgery to be like, or what I hope. I know some people can't eat certain things or have aversions to certain things, so that might alter the way foods are "tasted" at times. The hard truth (for him, or for me I suppose) is that it WILL be different. But if I decided to do some crash diet for 18 months it would also be different, too. I think, for me, I keep going back to the fact that I want a change. I need to reroute my course a bit for my own sake.

I'm 10 months post op and I can pretty much eat anything, just way smaller amounts. Because I was so big before I am in still in thr weight loss phase though, so I'm still following my plan. I have had a treat here and there and did fine. I still enjoy food and I feel like once I'm in maintenance I'll eat pretty normal. Like Catwoman says, I think I'll eat like someone who never had a weight problem.
It's actually really amazing to me when I get full so fast and I really enjoy the feeling. I never felt that way before.
Even though it has been a big change, it has been very welcome and I love it!

Good thought... I don't know, but I wonder if the emphasis is too MUCH on food. I feel like it is, but I don't think he's there yet, mentally (emotionally). But now my surgery got postponed, so he has more time to adjust! Ha.

I'm so sorry your surgery got postponed. I hope you will be able to reschedule when you are well. I found for me that the emphasis was TOO MUCH on food. It was hard in my family. Even my extended family focuses too much on food - if you ask my Uncle how his most recent trip to Italy was he'll say, "it was great, the FOOD!" Which to me seems like the wrong thing to focus on, although when I have traveled all over the world one of the things I've enjoyed is trying all the different candies and junk foods. I want to change that, so I'm focusing more on other things. I want to have more energy for exploring. And truthfully, it's not like the candy is all that tasty or all that different from what we have in the US.

Yes, that's definitely my hope - to just eat like a "normal" person. Or to have a healthy relationship with food. Like @lizonaplane said, the emphasis on food can be so strong, and that's where ours is right now. My surgery got rescheduled AGAIN for July so my husband and I have a bit more time (or he does, whatever) to figure things out. I've been paying more attention to how we treat food and each other.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
