GOING BACK TO OLD HABITS

Recommended Posts

I had VSG 12/07/20 and have no type of regrets!! However I am now 5 months post op and my stomach tolerates basically anything I give it. I recently have been over indulging in things I KNOW I shouldn't (cookies, chips, fast food). Just a couple of weeks ago I was soooo strict on what I ate and how much but ever since reaching ONDERLAND I just haven't been as strict. I could really use some advice and encouragement from those who have been where I am.. HOW DO I GET BACK ON TRACK?

First of all! congratulations on Onederland, you look amazing ❤️

I think people tend to relax once they’ve reached a goal and that’s probably natural. If you have further to go, rest but don’t stop and certainly don’t go backwards if you can help it

I have no particular words of wisdom when it comes to food choices except what you eat the majority of the time becomes your diet/lifestyle. Indulgences are the exception not the rule. Whatever you do, try for long term sustainability (under the direction of your team of course)

Sometimes indulge in what maybe considered junk foods. I think it’s common.

But it’s not super often I eat something I wished I didn’t or wasn’t in my plan. There were just things I was never going to give up. It may have meant I was NEVER going to reach lower weights (but I also don’t bounce around a lot) I’ve made my peace with that. This works for me but it’s not for everyone. Perhaps choose the lifestyle that will give you the results you want and allow you to be happy.

Good Luck ❤️

I'm not sure how you can eat that stuff so soon after the surgery. I am almost 9 months out, and still can't eat most things without feeling sick. The only advice I can give you is to think about your health. You look young, but as you get older the weight really effects your health badly. If your going to eat a lot of something, at least have it be something healthy. Ice cream was my favorite before my surgery, now when I crave it, I eat frozen yogurt instead and it satisfies me. Try to do food substitutions. I also used to eat tons of chocolate, now I will eat a small pc of dark chocolate and it makes the craving go away. Plus think of all that you went thru with the surgery and maybe that will help you push fwd. Good Luck

get back on track as soon as you can. Some people never reach their goal - and/or gain all their weight back - don't be one of them. Does your clinic have a dietitian and/or a therapist you can work with to help you get back on track? Sometimes it takes some professional assistance to get going again...

My stomach has been pretty happy with everything I’ve thrown at it, but I’ve categorized some things as “not for me anymore”. I know this isn’t popular and everything in moderation seems more sustainable but i also recognize that there are a few foods I can’t control myself with once I start. For me that’s candy and chips/popcorn. I know from past experience I can’t have it in the house and if I start with it I will eat too much. I also recognize that I’m the daughter of alcoholics and that I have addictive tendencies.

Try to think about if you are able to eat well in moderation or if you have some trigger foods that might not be able to be incorporated into your long term diet. Fast food and Cookies might be something that won’t work for you.

For me it's bread, cake, and similar items. I can't keep that stuff in the house. I will occasionally let myself have an indulgence but I enjoy the treat and then that's it. What I don't eat gets given or thrown away and I get right back on plan. And I don't indulge often. Even Keto bread-like products will kick off cravings for me. People can advise but we are each the only one who lives in our particular body. Trying to regularly eat bread "in moderation" would be a fast-track to regaining all the weight I've lost.

Very much agree- I did weight watchers about 15 years ago and they were huge on “NOTHING is forbidden, if you ever forbid yourself something then that causes binging!” Trying to tell myself that I should be able to deal with sugar and snack food in moderation and keeping it in the house led me to weighing 340 lbs. If it’s there I eat it!

My wife and I also had surgery at the end of last year. What we tend to do is not keep things in the house that would take us off plan too far. Even with Cookies or chips, we tend to go more for the Protein chips or Keto cookies (Highkey cookies are really good) to try to have a slightly healthier option. We also tend to purchase low/no sugar chocolate and only eat a small amount when we do. I also tend to have healthier dessert yogurt "Dannon light and fit" and low sugar Protein Bars such as fitcrunch bars that are delicious but fairly close to plan. By doing this I am still able to have a treat but not over indulge. The closer to plan I can keep my treats, the better the long term results I feel will happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
