Are Smart Scales Worth it?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a FitTrack or other smart scale to measure muscle and fat mass? Seems like it would be helpful info (and encouraging during the times you may not be losing weight, but gaining muscle!) but skeptical if it really works and if the additional data is actually worth the $100.

Any thoughts?

I have a renpho. Like $30 on Amazon. I like it. I know they are not perfect for body composition, but it is awesome for tracking trends.

I have researched this a little bit and I have read that there is so much variation depending on hydration level and other factors that it's very hard to get an accurate reading from home "smart scales" that say that they measure body composition. Like, you may think you are getting leaner but then the next week it will show you as having higher body fat because you have a lower hydration level.

Whether you can still get trends over time, I couldn't tell, but I decided that I would want to know more accurately and more consistently than these were likely to provide, and that the numbers being all over the place would drive me bananas.

This is true and important to keep in mind. I do have one though, and it's cool to see other victories outside of weight. Mine tells me my "body's age" on the accompanying app, and it's neat to see hydration levels and those other figures improve over time. It's also helpful because the app lets you track your weight and you can compare dates to see how your body has changed. It being just like $10-15 more than a standard scale made me just purchase it and have those cool extra features, so long as you know that it's not going to be 100% accurate.

Know yourself, though. If you think small inaccuracies or inconsistency could discourage you, then stick with something simpler.

I have the Renpho, and I don't really pay much attention to the other measurements. I love the way it has an app that it automatically connects to. I also bought the Renpho Smart measuring tape, and I love it! It takes measurements with a click of a button and reports it to the app.

Now THAT sounds interesting. But I just checked it out quick and it appears it only goes to 60 inches. I think my hips are 62. Or at least they were years ago when I last checked. LOL I could always get it and wait until I lose a few inches before I start to use it.

Mine tells me my Water weight percentage so, at least in my case, it accounts for those differences. I get trends over time and it's pretty awesome - weight, fat %, water %, muscle mass % and bone mass %. It also calculates my BMI.

It's matched up pretty well to the unit at my doctors office when I've compared the results.

I use regular bathroom scales, and they are enough for me since I calculate the rest of the information myself. I don't use smart scales because I don't trust what they display when I measure something other than weight. On the other hand, if you buy expensive smart scales tested by many buyers and reliable, this is really a worthwhile purchase. Still, unfortunately, I am not ready to overpay for additional calculations that I can easily make myself. If money is not a problem for you, it will be a worthwhile purchase.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
