Dumping syndrome and 3 week stall of weight loss

Recommended Posts

I’m 15 days post roux en y and have been doing well and even running slowly, Ran 2 miles in less than 32 minutes yesterday including a hill! Last night I felt dehydrated and hungry and I’m now 15 days after surgery so I picked. Mushy meal of beef vegetable Soup and I ate it. This morning had horrific bleeding stomach problems and had to miss work. Haven’t had this before- so I tried to eat eggs late afternoon and threw up. This is my first bad day. I am tolerating my medications, etc. but today my stomach is cramping and not very happy.
also the weight loss stalled this week- not sure why. Today I finally dropped a pound.
anyone have any comments?

that's not dumping syndrome - dumping syndrome is when you eat too much sugar (or for some people, fat - but sugar is by far the most common culprit). The sugar passes into your small intestine too quickly and your body goes into overdrive trying to deal with it. You get heart palpitations, dizziness, sweating, diarrhea. It can go on for quite awhile. Some people get nausea, too - but I don't think what you had was dumping syndrome.

is the Soup allowed on your plan at 15 days out? A lot of people (but not all...) are still on liquids then. I was on purees then, so I would have had to puree the soup before eating it.

a lot of us can't tolerate eggs the first few weeks or months after surgery. Most of us can eat them again eventually. Wait a week or two and try again - but know that it might take longer. I never had any issues with eggs, but I know a lot of people do.

anyway, I think the issue is you're progressing a bit too quickly, although the bleeding stomach would concern me. I'd call your clinic and let them know.

and yes - a stall at two weeks out is not uncommon. Most of us hit our first major stall sometime within the first month after surgery. It's called "the three week stall" because it's usually the third week, but not always. Mine was weeks 2 and 3. During week 4, it broke and I dropped like eight pounds within a couple of days. Just stick to your plan and stay off your scale for a few days. And know that it WILL break. It always does.

15 days out from surgery and you are running? Did your surgeon okay that? If so, great, if not maybe you should speak to your surgeon to get the ok. The bleeding may be due to the stomach jolting while running.

I wasn't allowed to that at 15 days out, either. I was only allowed to walk until I was four weeks out.

OK... "Horrific bleeding"?

If this is not something that happens periodically then...

Since you say it's never happened before, and you just had surgery, at the least I would definitely call your medical team. Depending on how horrific, maybe a trip to the ER.

Remember, your body is under tremendous stress from the surgery and the healing. Another stress is that you are eating extremely few calories. Another stress is running 2 miles.

Get help please. Heal first.

Good luck

Sorry- that’s a typo- did not have bleeding- sorry about that- I think you are correct/ progressing too fast- they told me it’s ok to run, just no weights or sit ups fir another 2 weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
