Hi everyone! I had my surgery June 9th and I just stumbled upon this forum :) Dealing with a serious lack of sleep, lots of bloating and nausea right now. Things are not amazing. When can I expect to feel better? I was unable to hold anything down for the first two days after surgery, but I was dismissed today. Excited for my new life to begin, but right now I'm in a lot of pain :(

Hi Catherine. I had surgery on June 3rd. I had a couple of minor complications and had to wait 12 hours before I was allowed to get out of bed and walk. I haven't had nausea at all, but the gas pain was really bad between doses of pain meds (which was only Tylenol with codeine after the first night). I would say to keep up on your meds and try to walk, but also REST. I just focused on getting some Water in and resting and now at a little over a week, I feel almost back to normal. Hang in there!

@catherinetheok I promise each day gets a little better. I had mine 6/8 and I’m already feeling better. I was told I am allowed to take Tylenol pm crushed up for sleep if needed but not sure if you would be allowed based on your plan.
My best advice is to walk a lot and sip Water and Gatorade all day. sugar free popsicles have been a huge life saver! I know things will look up for you soon... just try to stay positive! 💜

Hi all. Surgery was yesterday and all went well. All the gas settled in my chest which made sleeping impossible last night. I was discharged this morning. Aside from the gas pain and pain from the surgery I had a lot of nausea. I’ve been focused on Water and popsicles today. I thought I had prepared myself for what small sips would be like but boy was I wrong! There is a definite technique for learning just how much water your new stomach will allow. I ate a little Greek yogurt tonight with no chunks and my stomach was gurgling like crazy. I have no idea if that means it is hungry, full or just learning to function again.

You are ABSOLUTELY not alone. My bypass was on the 9th and I'm struggling to figure out hunger, fullness and the gurgling. And I keep taking sips that are too large. I used to gulp water and I really have to stay mindful so I don't feel sick. I've heard from others that its hard to gauge with liquids and things will be easier to understand once we get to puree and soft foods. Hang in there!

Question for those who have recently had their surgeries. I'm in the Full liquid stage just fyi: Do your Protein Drinks count towards your total liquid intake? Or is your liquid intake only Water? They would like me to get 3 Protein Shakes in a day with 64 oz of water. Haven't been able to make that happen yet. I'm around 300-400 calories a day. 3 days post op. Also the bloating and Constipation are REAL.

My Protein Shakes counted towards my liquid goal.

My surgical team confirmed before I left the hospital that everything on the liquid stage can count towards my liquid intake. I’ll be on fluids until 7/11. I’m definitely focused on getting them in. Really don’t want to have to go back for dehydration. It’s a very slow go to get it in. The doctor also said not to expect to hit the liquid goal right out of the gate as it’s a slow process to build up to that goal. Also, I am so glad to hear I am not alone with trying to figure out this new stomach. The gurgling had me kind of concerned last night and made me pretty paranoid about the yogurt I tried. I am so looking forward to thing getting easier!

Got to sleep in my own bed last night. While it certainly wasn’t 100% comfortable I did get more sleep than the night before. Turning over in bed is quite the adventure. I’m so used to being self sufficient and handling things it’s been hard to step back and let others manage the house for me. Overall though it is so much better being home!

My surgery was yesterday. It was scheduled for 12 ;30 but there were some issues with the person ahead of me so I finally got in at 5:15. I was so glad they didn't postpone it because I was dying on that pre-op diet only to turn around today and find out that I'm still on liquid for the next 2 weeks!

Well, I’m on day 3 post op. I feel like I’ve been doing very well so far. Pain is little to none. No nausea or vomiting. Today, I’m struggling with swallowing. My throat is sore and irritated from the anesthesia. I have no voice and it hurts to swallow. Help!

Oh, also… the gas the first day after surgery is unreal! GasX and walking came in super handy…

What is the pre op testing

For me they did an EKG and blood draw. I didn't have to do the covid test because I'm vaccinated. Hope all goes well for you!

I was told that the 64oz was in addition to the shakes but each Dr is different. I would love it if it did count. I'm 1 day post-op and I've only managed to down a little Soup, almost a whole shake, a popsicle and a few ounces of water. Tomorrow will be better though!

Hi Everyone, just checking in to see how y’all are doing. I had surgery on June 1st and fell like I’m doing pretty well. Really struggling with “head hunger” but trying to turn it around when it appears and telling myself how lucky I am now that I don’t have to give in to it. Including the pre-op diet, it really took my body awhile to get used to not eating very much (feeling weak, light headed, etc.). But, I think My body has adjusted and I’m feeling much better. In addition I started with Vitamins a few days ago and that has helped as well. Starting to look at recipes I can tolerate, but that is just making me more hungry. How is everyone else doing?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
