Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am coming up on two months post op and I do not have any regrets. I haven’t tried everything yet but I’ve already eaten quite a variety of food. I thought I’d miss my Coke Zero (I drank a 12 pack a day) and I honestly don’t. I drink crystal light now and I am totally content with that. And I wake up easier now that I’m off the caffeine. I don’t see why you couldn’t have red meat or Reese cups, especially with the sleeve. I am eating lean ground beef now. It will probably be a while before I attempt steak but I ate a lot of that on the pre op diet anyways so I don’t really miss it.

My GP believes all it takes is sheer willpower -as in “Just start eating healthy and exercising”. Looks like I’ll need to find a more supportive doctor. As for red meat, the woman giving her testimony at the info meeting said she had a lot of trouble digesting it and it seemed to stay in her stomach for a long time.
I’m so glad to read all the positive comments and honest answers. Thank-you.

Your GP doesnt have weight issues I suspect. It takes willpower either way. You can eat red meat or anything else as long as you can tolerate it. Good luck to you.

Otherwise known as "Skinny People's Disease" or SPD. Never been overweight a minute in their life and have zero frame of reference. Because it's easy for them to stay fit, it therefore is easy for everyone to stay fit, so the obvious answer (to them) is that you're just not trying hard enough.

An alternative GP would be my recommendation; their not being "in your corner" moving forward could prove troublesome for the original poster down the line.

I had my gastric bypass 12 years ago and never regretted it. It saved me from lots of health issues.

I did regret getting the surgery for about four weeks after because recovery was ruff I also had a hiatal hernia repair and my hip got messed up some how during the surgery and could barely walk on it for a week and a half. Mind u the hip was in bad shape before surgery so it didn’t take much. How ever I am 11 months out and 88 pounds down n I do have trouble digesting steak it doesn’t sit well and I really don’t miss anything and now my only regret is that I didn’t do it 10 yrs ago. Hershey Reese’s Peanut Butter cup are in sugar free ! Just so you know the sell them at target. I love just know if I really need a peanut butter cup I can have one. Good luck 🍀

I haven't regretted the surgery over all. I have struggled at times with acid reflux and spent a few nights sleeping in the recliner. I have also struggled when I really liked the taste of a certain food but could not eat more than a few bites. My only true regret is not having the surgery sooner. As for restrictive food, I am only 8 weeks out but have already had a small amount of ground beef with cheese at a Mexican restaurant so I am not sure why it would be restricted. I don't have any desire for anytime of coke products or beer both of which I loved when I was not focused on being healthy AND I can't wait to try the Quest Peanut Butter Cups!!

I weighed 340 lbs before gestric bypass. I had problems after problems but lost 160 lbs and then had a boss from hell and a shock my husband asked for a divorce after 15 years from my surgery I’m glad I had it. I’m healthier and loving my life again.

I am only 2 weeks post op, and already eating ground up burger for my tacos, I actually found I don't like the tortillas right now, but beef, onion, cheese and a little Tomato. Yum , your life is going to chance drastically in the beginning especially, but the fact that you are obsessed with food you don't think you can have, my opinion is you still need some counseling or deep thoughts. Good Luck

I do not regret my surgery at all!! I had my surgery on March 3, 2020. I weighed 230 on my surgery day and I weigh 140 now. I have very little saggy skin and I’m running now and doing yoga and it’s toning me up. I love my body and it’s helping me love the inner me. Good luck!

I have heard that some people tend to move towards plant based meats after WLS, but I know many who still do eat red meat. The ones that don't said they simply didn't care for the taste anymore after surgery. I have tolerated everything I've eaten so far without issue... well, except for Lemon Pepper packaged tuna. My tummy did not like that. Everything else has been fine. I am one of the lucky ones that haven't had complications with food or drinking. The journey is different for everyone.

I regret I didn’t do it sooner but I get it. I was so scared of this surgery that I tried everything else before; including the balloon! Gained it all back except the money. I had my sleeve surgery last December. Started at 200 now I weigh 147. Again, I regret not doing this sooner.

I had my surgery on 4-26 and I am honestly feeling like I did everything for nothing, just some scares on my fat stomach! I am still hungry and I am only supposed to be able to tolerate 2-4oz at a time yesterday I was so thirsty and drink like 3 bottles of sugar free diet tea and 4 bottles of Water really didn’t think that was normal so just to see today I ate a cup of rice and nothing🤔🤔🤔 I think my surgeon just cut my stomach open and did nothing, my husband said the surgery took like 20 minutes! I’m sure I still have the same stomach and now feel so hopeless after I was so hopeful 😩😩😩

OMG! Can you check with another doctor? Maybe they can take a look and validate if the sleeve is ok. Hope everything is fine.

I have heard that the restriction doesn't kick in right away, but call your surgery center and ask if it's normal, and double check what you should be eating at this stage. Make sure it's not "head hunger" too!

the fluids are probably OK - they move through you pretty fast Eating a cup of rice was a bad idea, though. You've had nerves cut and likely won't feel restriction right away - they need a couple of weeks at least to start regenerating. Plus you're so early out of surgery that you could do some real damage by not following the food progression. Please follow your food plan. I know it can be challenging, but...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
