Educational / motivational educators?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm pre-surgery (self-pay) in Canada, and the process is incredibly smooth and quick. But on the other hand, apart from the nuts and bolts of the diet, not much attention is spent on the other educational aspects of post-rny life.

Could anyone suggest sources of educational / motivational authors for me to dive into to get a better sense of what I'm going to be encountering on the journey? I'd heard of Dr. Duc Vuong - anyone else you're found helpful?

I am in Ontario and almost 6 months post op RNY. When working through the OHIP process for bariatric surgery there are a lot of resources provided including documentation on all the do's and don'ts etc. I believe that all of these surgeries covered by OHIP are funnelled through the Ontario Bariatric Centres of Excellence. This way they were able to achieve some level (using that loosely) of standardization. I would be very surprised if the clinic/surgeon you are going through doesn't have some sort of similar options to offer you. Sometimes advocating on your own behalf isn't easy but I personally think the surgery is the easy part. The rest is what's hard. I would like to send you a pm but I have never done that in here. I will give it a try.

I've loved watching John Pilcher's videos! Very straightforward and he has a soothing manner lol.

I found Dr. Vuong very abrasive and unpleasant. I like Erin Branscom's videos on you tube (My Level 10 Life). I don't agree with everything she says, but I like her style for the most part. She also has a private Facebook group I've found very supportive. She focuses a little more on VSG than RNY, but most of it applies to both. I agree with Matthew Weiner.

Me TOO! Thought about going to San Antonio (from Dallas) to go to his practice. But it's not feasible for all the pre- and post- appointments.

Dr. Matthew Weiner (YouTube channel) is very good too.

I was going to suggest him too. He helped me a lot. He also wrote two books. One is “pound of cure” which is a new lifestyle for nutrition that I found pretty informative.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
