Tired of waiting for surgery...

Recommended Posts

I called the surgery center at the end of January and started making changes to my diet (giving up diet soda, reducing carbs, drinking 30 min after meals) right away. I had my first few visits with the surgery team in February and March and was losing weight the whole time, but now I have so long to wait... I won't be having surgery till at least August because of the required nutrition classes and backlogs due to COVID.

I'm sick of cooking, sick of thinking about food and weight loss, and sick of waiting... not sure how to keep up momentum. It's fine when I'm busy at work, but when work is slow, I just can't think about anything else. I'm trying to keep myself busy, but I don't like TV most things here are still closed. I've been reading two or three books a week. I hurt my hip due to too much walking...

How can I deal with this waiting???

Have you tried any new hobbies. Like taking up a craft. I do crafts to distract myself and make time pass quicker when I am board or anxious.

I went through all the crafts I could think of during the pandemic. Soap making, knitting, baking, cooking... I really want to get out of my house but there's no where to go.

I was originally going to have surgery in April 2020 (could have scheduled for March, but April was better for work). Then everything shut down due to COVID and I was postponed until July. It was an extremely depressing time for me, waiting, while the world we know went off the rails. I did not make healthy choices during that time and gained about 10 pounds. Surprisingly, the time flew by and I started my pre-op diet in late June. I lost 15 pounds on my prescribed pre-op diet and had surgery on July 6. Waiting was awful, but the time really does fly.

I hope you can find more peace and health while you wait than I did. Just keep your eye on the prize! 💕💕💕

I hope the time starts to go by faster. So far it's going really slow... mostly because work is slow. I have more travel coming up so that should make it go faster soon (yes, I'm vaccinated!).

Thanks!

Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. I understand your frustration. I was able to fast-track my preparation and was set to go when Covid hit. I made the decision not to proceed with any surgery as I work in a profession that had/has an extremely high potential for Covid transmission. One of the doctors in the program kept reminding me to use the time to practice eating as if I was two years after surgery. I didn't want to hear it. But it was the truth. I was thinking that she was only referring to eating the amounts I could have after surgery. In reality, having to chew thoroughly and wait to drink have been the hardest. I should have practiced that more.

While I have worked the entire time during the pandemic, you will soon have the availability to travel. Keep the faith and stay mindful of your desired results. You can do this.

I started this process in July of 2020. I was finished with all my requirements feb 4 2021. They forgot to submit my paperwork for 1.5 months. They finally submitted it got approval 2 weeks later. Took the nurse 2 more weeks to call me and now my surgery date is July 28. I agree the waiting is really the hard part. I was excited we were finally gonna set a date and then let down to find out its 3 months and 1 week away

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
