Most vets advise that you start slowly with alcohol at first, because it may affect you differently than before surgery. So it might be a good idea to try a glass of wine at home, where it doesn't matter if it ends up hitting you really hard. Then you'll have some idea of how much you can drink while you're out and be okay. Also, be careful that alcohol doesn't become a substitute coping mechanism to replace the food you can't eat anymore. It might sound alarmist but transfer addictions have happened to people (I had to check myself because I found myself shopping to get the emotional soothing I used to get from food). Other than that, factor those calories into your into plan and enjoy!

Congrats on your wedding anniversary @mischa23.

Have to admit I did look forward to that first gin & tonic after surgery at my cousin’s 40th but it took me hours to drink it. I had to stir it a bit to release some of the bubbles in the tonic first but honestly it didn’t quite taste the same (damn weird post surgery taste buds) & I wasn’t really enjoying it. I still find that with wine & champagne. Even dry not sweet wines taste too sweet & I don’t enjoy drinking them as much when I do have the odd glass. Even now, I only have one glass of alcohol about once or twice a month & I take ages to drink it. Gin is probably the drink I enjoy most (I was always an gin drinker so yay) & I find I rarely finish a glass of champagne. You may be totally different but don’t be surprised if that first glass is not quite as enjoyable.

Hope your anniversary is a special day for you both.

Congratulations on your anniversary - hope you both have a blast. I am only 17 days post op so likely a ways down the line for me. Curious how long ago you had surgery? Trying to gage when I can try a glass of wine.

First of all congrats on celebrating ten years and I wish you many more to come. Like jaelzion suggested I would try it at home first. It could hit you much harder than before and for some the sugar can even cause dumping. I don’t think this is as much an issue with sleevers as bypass but still a possibility you don’t want to deal with on your anniversary. I would pay attention to how long it takes to get out of your system too so you can sorta gage how long you should wait between drinks as to not get totally blitzed.and I don’t think I will ever drink and then drive again since I read that it takes way longer to get out of your blood and varies from person to person so no one really knows exactly how long you should wait but maybe some of the vets can give better advice on that one.

If you are anything like me (you may very well NOT be), pay attention to the sugar content of your drinks. i had just a few sips of a soju-sake drink at around 2 months post-op and paid the price: was basically on the bathroom floor for a while and then out of commission for the rest of the night. Luckily I was at home.

P.S. i was sleeved.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
