Gastric Leak and food capacity

Recommended Posts

Baratricpals,

Just wanted to know 2 things

1) how much could you get down in one 20min sitting? I am getting through 150ml of yoghurt or Soup. It take about an hr for 200ml Protein Shake. I also boiled one small potato and mashed it. Smashed it down (full) but had dumping after. I am 11 dpo

2) anyone who had leaks? Whats it like and when did it happen?

Cheers

11 days out? I would say its possibly a little too soon for potato but if they are on your post op guidelines for this stage, you may want to try again in a few days.

I can't remember all that well 11 days out, but my starting point was the serving size in my guidelines...typically the more liquid, the more pureed the more I could drink/eat before restriction kicked in. It wasn't until I was on solid foods that the restrictions really kicked in. I do remember sometimes not always finishing off what I had served.

20 -30 mins for 2ozs or 1/4 cup of purred or soft foods. I could take an hour or 2 to drink 200mls. I still take ages to eat or drink anything. (Been sipping 300+mls of green tea for over 90 mins now & yes it’s pretty cold 😁.)

I was told no potato until maintenance by my dietician - too starchy but there are a lot of post surgery plans. I tried some mashed then but not good & I still can’t tolerate them at almost 2 yrs. Had a small piece yesterday & there was my restriction & it sat like a lump in my tummy. Almost vomited when I got home.

I didn’t have a leak. They are pretty uncommon but can occur. Increasing pain, fever, fast heart beat, dizziness, shortness of breath are all symptoms of a gastric leak. But if you experience any pain or anything that is uncommon for you, contact your medical team as soon as possible.

I did not have a leak to speak of. I stuck with the 2oz that was recommended. I did not even feel the restriction until soft food stage though so I could have eaten a lot more but stuck with the guidelines the dietician gave me. Which was hard cause I really wanted to FEEL that restriction but I trusted the process and it was there when I got to that stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
