I had a glass of wine lol and it did absolutely nothing. I felt fine, wasn’t drunk or even a little buzzed at all but it was nice to be able to sip and feel normal. I’ll only have one glass if I’m out or there’s a special occasion. I Had Merlot and I sipped on that one glass for about an hour lol it was hubby and I date night so that was the reason. It was fine!!!’

I have had about two more glasses of wine over the last two weeks and honestly I don’t feel anything at all lol I sip really slow and don’t always finish the glass but i feel fine, not sure what the big deal is I guess it’s different for everyone lol

That makes me hopeful! My husband and I are wine lovers and I'll be missing it. I know I'll never be able to have several glasses at a time ever again, but would like to (slowly and carefully) be able to enjoy one with him eventually. LOL

I'm a whiskey guy. I started to drink occasionally at 6 weeks, even though my plan called for one year of no alcohol. This is not advice. I'm just posting what I did. For me, I needed as much normal as I could have, without jeopardizing my progress. I have been very successful so far.

At about a month out I started having little sips of my husband's glass of wine. One sip one night two sips another night so in a week I'd had maybe three sips. No problems. last Saturday six weeks out I had my own glass with a whole ounce in it. Spilled half of it so ended up having half an ounce over two hours, Lol no problems. I think sipping a glass slowly if you're tolerating it well is no problem at all. Again as long as it's not going to trigger bad behavior. I also need normal in order to feel like I'm not missing out on anything. But the serving sizes are so tiny anyways I just don't see the harm. I followed all of the rules and my doctor doesn't see a problem as long as I'm tolerating it. In two weeks we have a party at the house and my intention is to have my own glass of wine. Even if it takes me the entire day to drink it. 😊 😁 Yay

I had a small glass of wine starting at like 4 months postop. I didn’t really want any before that. My plan calls for not drinking during the weight loss phase, but my weight loss phase is going to last for a while since I have so much to lose so I felt like it was ok to introduce. It went fine, I have one every month or so now. Long term with the surgery I’m not going to be a teetotaler for life, so I’m trying to build reasonable habits.

Pre-op here. Just saw my nutritionist today. My surgeon has insisted on no carbonated drinks EVER, for life. There goes champagne. And White Claws. I asked why, and he said that consistent intake will expand your pouch. So I’m thinking I’m limited to like a champagne toast at the rare wedding and nothing else.

my nutritionist told me however that alcohol is not off limits once in stage four of eating, just drink it slowly and try it at home. Get a Designated Driver if you’re out. Try to get something low in sugar to avoid dumping, like a shot diluted in ice with a lemon twist, or the old classic, a vodka cranberry.

Oh my goodness. Wine.. that’s a lucky thought. I’m also six weeks post-op. I begged for a couple whole grain goldfish pretzels rather than drinking coconut Water to get my required carbs. I got back a two page email from the dietician guilting me into not having them. I can’t even imagine the response I’d get if I requested wine. Makes me laugh thinking about it!

I was warned by a Bypass patient that she would be feeling the effects very quickly and had very low tolerance for alcohol. She also told me that in 45 minutes “I’m sober as a judge.” She is >10 years out and suggested no drinking.
I was craving soda too. Bought a small can of Diet Pepsi and shook it enough to get all of the carbonation out. I drank it and realized...not the same...the craving went away and flat pop...😞.

You are absolutely right. The bypass definitely makes alcohol a big fat no-no. For sure it can create an alcoholic out of somebody who never had a problem very quickly. But the sleeve is not the same thing Thank goodness and I never had a problem with drinking alcohol in the past but I certainly enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. I had 3 oz of white wine last night over 2 hours. I never once felt buzzed and I enjoyed it very much with a little bit of cheese. As for soda I have never been a big soda drinker. I can't drink caffeine I can't tolerate it for the last four or five years I have had no caffeine in my life and I'm better off for it. And soda doesn't call to me thank goodness. I'm good with Water. Every now and then I have Crystal light but I actually get bored of Crystal light and crave plain water.

I did have wine and it does hit you quicker, definitely true. But I didn’t get sick or feel bad from it. I only had one and I really nursed it, over the course of an hour.
I personally think that, aside from alcohol being empty calories, etc., doctors want us to avoid it because of a tendency to make stupid food decisions as a result. When I drink, I absolutely do not pay careful attention to what I am eating or how fast I am eating...

So true! You definitely get the drunchies. Or at least I do. LOL Always after a night of drinking I'm raiding the fridge for something to eat. And usually not the best of choices. But I am glad to hear that most of you have been able to keep down a glass of wine. Hubby and I usually spend one night each weekend (or at least a weekend or two each month) hanging with our friends (neighbors) at the fire, or in the pool come Summer having several drinks. Gonna miss that in the beginning for sure.

Just remember to take it slow. Our bodies absorb alcohol differently now.

I can definitely agree that unplanned random drinking can certainly lead to some drunk decision making. So I only drink occasionally and plan my experience. I have these super dainty lovely crystal glasses that full only hold three ounces. I fill to the curve line with an ounce. I cut up an ounce of this delightful extra aged Gouda cheese with those crystals in it into tiny pieces . So I know my tasty snack and dont drink enough for an altered state requiring fridge cleaning.

White wine seems to be better for me which is weird because I was a strong red wine girl before. Wine has little to no effect on me so I’m not sure what all the hoopla was about. I have a half glass once a week sometimes I’ll finish a full glass ( about 6 oz) I do get a little tipsy but it doesn’t last long at all. I haven’t had any after affects and I definitely don’t eat more afterwards, if anything I’ve been eating less these past few weeks. I’m sure transfer addiction is real but it hasn’t affected me like that at all. I kinda despise eating and it’s more like a chore now.

      Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
