Has anyone had drastic vision changes after VSG? I am not convinced it is related to WLS but I am just wondering if anyone else had any issues. I have had glasses since I was in high school and I will be 50 next month so I am getting older and vision changes are natural but I had my eyes checked this week because of some changes going on and holy smokes.......talk about changes. My astigmatism is out of control, both my close up and distance prescription changed to the point the dr had them check the machine and he double checked his reading ...... I have to have them checked again in 3 months and again in 6 months because of the drastic changes???

I know getting old sucks but cripes I did not SEE this coming... haha

Getting old is a b*tch. And our sight deteriorating is another one of those signs our bodies are wearing out. How depressing.

I’ve worn glasses since I was about 12. I’m short sighted (very myopic) but then around 45ish, I started having trouble reading. Yep, my long vision was deteriorating. Then my glaucoma was picked up as was a thin retina. I wear contacts & now wear a script for distance in one eye & near vision in the other.

I’ve had no discernible changes to my vision or glaucoma & my retina hasn’t thinned any further since I had surgery but the changes that did occur did so when I was between about 45 & 50.

Amusingky, had my flu vaccine on Wednesday & my GP started to ask if I had my COVID vaccination yet but then corrected herself saying oh you’re too young & healthy to have yours yet. I replied that it’s been a damn long time since someone said I was too young for something. 😆😆😆😆

The main thing that I can think of would be improvement in diabetes issues, as eyesight is one of the things influenced by diabetes. If you were diabetic pre-op, whether you knew it or not, better blood sugar control improves your eyesight. When my wife was first diagnosed and got under medication for it, she had just had new glasses made and they were near useless afterward.

I never experienced any notable vision changes after surgery, though I was specifically not diabetic before or after, nor was I under any vision care, so that was subjective observation rather than objective measurement.

I haven’t heard of any eye issues being a complication or even anyone with temporary vision changes. I think it’s probably unrelated. The eye Dr should know though.

So here is the skinny, haha!!! I am having some absorption issues after all! I have some super low B12 levels and my Iron is really low as well. I have had multiple bowel resections before my VSG so my surgeon feels i need to change up my Vitamins to liquid (yuck, yuck and more yuck) but hopefully that will help prevent more nerve damage!!!

He also things that maybe if we can straighten out this absorption thing we can fool the old body into burn mode again and get these last 30ish pounds off!!

I’m happy with my progress, don’t get me wrong 70 pounds is nothing to sneeze at but that goal weight is just sitting there mocking me! I need to smash it!!

Wow I never thought of Vitamin deficiencies. Makes sense though. Glad you and your doc figured it out. Good luck on the rest of the weight.

I was in a support group meeting last night and one of the people was saying her vision has changed too. I haven't had surgery yet and I haven't really had my eyes checked in decades, so I can't say.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
