Surgery cancelled due to COVID surge :-(

Recommended Posts

My bypass was scheduled for April 21 and I was slogging through my pre-op diet... then today (April 15) I got a call from the surgical scheduler, all surgeries have been cancelled due to the COVID surge here in Michigan. 😭 Honestly, I get why it had to be done but I've been waiting six months for this surgery. I was mentally prepared and had work time-off all arranged... I'm tempted to drown my sorrows in pizza!

Anyone else had this happen (this year or last year)?

I'm sorry, that's gotta be devastating. A lot of people on here were in the same situation last year. Hang in there, it's a delay, not a denial.

Yes this happened to me as well. I was originally scheduled for December 2020 and it got postponed. Got the call on January 25th to reschedule for 2/23. DON"T DO LIKE I DID AND GO CRAZY EATING!! This would be a good time to get used to eating less. Good luck...it will pass by quickly.

Happened to me last year too. Scheduled for 3/18/20 and was pushed to 5/18/20, and this was after 9 months of prep work!

I agree with the post above. Don't go crazy on eating. Anything you lose between now and surgery day will pay dividends in the long run (I lost 24 more lbs in my 2 month delay). Keep the faith and your day will come soon enough.

Having an elective but still, necessary surgery delayed is a patient's nightmare. This sucks. Unless personally affected by it, most don't think about the consequences of an increase in Covid cases--like postponed surgeries which can lead to patient suffering.

I know the future of your surgery is uncertain right now. Try not to lose the momentum you have. Being both physically and mentally prepared for surgery can make a huge impact on your outcome and it sounds like you've worked so hard for this. Please, back away from the pizza and use the coping skills you've learned to get through this tough time. Remember your goals.

Sending positive energy your way. ❤️💪

Yup, it’s a bummer. My VSG was originally scheduled 12/17/20 but was rescheduled to 2/4/21. Hang in there and keep treating yourself like surgery is imminent!

Yes you're right this sucks big time. My surgery was originally scheduled for March 2020 And I live in a great state of stupidville California where somebody hiccups and they shut the whole state down. Anyway I had to wait a year for my surgery date ultimately ended up being 3-18-21. A year after my original schedule date and one month exactly after my mother died of covid. That encouraged me big time because my mom's weight was so high they couldn't turn her over. Her suffering was so bad before we lost her. So I understand about the need for covid shutdowns and I understand the devastation of having this necessary surgery postponed. But everyone here is right saying stick to your guns and to the tools that you've learned. You can take off some additional weight before your surgery. Be even healthier for it, and your outcome can be good and you'll heal really well and fast. Time goes by no matter what we do. So let's make the best of the time that we have.

It is an awful feeling.. I originally started the process in March 2020 right before COVID started. It all got delayed until 2020. I'm so impatient so I was really frustrated. I ended up getting it in July 2020.
Actually, if it hadn't been for the delay, I would not have gone to my surgeon and would have chosen RNY instead of Loop DS so I'm actually glad it happened in retrospect.
I'm so sorry this happened to you and I hope they can reschedule it as soon as possible!

Stupid Covid 🤬 I was scheduled May 3 and was notified yesterday it has been canceled and they will reschedule when surgeries can resume. Really messes with your mindset when you are so close.

So sorry. I know this is really tough news. Hopefully, the Covid wave will let up and we can get back to performing elective surgeries. Until then, try to stay strong.

Late to the party here, I've been notified my upcoming surgery for gastric sleeve & gall bladder removal for 2 Sep is now cancelled due to Covid. I'm not entirely sure when to expect a change in decision making but hopeful this year 😕. For now it's more Protein Bars & Soups.< br />
I hope things are on the up for you.

Ugh. I’m sorry @AM_is_losing. You got about same notice as me when mine was canceled. My surgery ended up being 4 weeks after the originally scheduled date.

Thanks @MistySkye , I'm glad to hear your surgery happened the following month despite the initial disappointment of it all. I hope you're doing well and living it up now.

Fingers and toes are crossed that maybe my time will come soonish.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
