Baba Raba 7 Posted April 15, 2021 Hello Bariatropals, So, a week out of surgery and I am wondering what percentage of excess weight have you lost? By excess weight, I mean the extras kilos over your ideal heathy weight BMI. I was 128 kg/ 282 lbs pre op. (3 weeks prior to surgery) I was 118kg / 260 lbs, on surgery day (3 weeks after my initial consult) I am 114kg / 251lbs, 8 days post surgery. My ideal is 72kg/160lbs. I doubt I will get there because everything I read says 60% excess. Interested how you guys are going and if there is anyone with similiar stats. I am 170cm/5'7 tall. Hop_Scotch 1,633 Posted April 15, 2021 60% is an average, some will lose more, some will lose less. Some are happy with less and don't need to strive with more, for some less is their natural set point, for others they are happier with more and their natural set point is lower. Something to consider is 'best weight' - last thing anyone wants is to set a low point that they need to struggle with everyday to achieve, but even worse to maintain 1 Katiebal_Lecter reacted to this
catwoman7 11,221 Posted April 15, 2021 ^^^ what Hop Scotch said. 60% is the average. As with all averages, you'll find people who fall on either side of that. You'll find people who have lost 100% of their excess weight, and people who lost 20%. I originally lost 100%. I'm in the 90's somewhere now (at almost six years out). 1 Takoda reacted to this

First my stats: female, 5'2”, weight at beginning of 2 wk pre-op diet: 235 lbs, currently 2.5+ yrs post-op Second to answer your question: Apparently there are many different ways to calculate “ideal weight”! So using the “Peterson Method” of calculation, my ideal weight is 119 lbs, which would mean excess weight lost as of today is 107.7% If we go by “normal” BMI 25 as baseline, my ideal weight is 136 lbs, which calculates excess weight lost as 126.2% Lastly, I like the little “Pearl” tidbit in @Hop_Scotch’s image posts. This is what I may be already striving for without realizing. Further, I also understand that this “best weight” is Fluid and will change as I change. Per a Peterson Method calculator, my ideal weight is 145. For the OP, my stats are 5’8” with starting weight of 264 (before starting pre-op diet, AND my highest weight), so pretty close to your stats. I did have bypass rather than sleeve due to pre-existing GERD. Based on the Peterson Method ideal weight, I have lost 104% of my excess body weight at my current weight of 140. I am a bit over nine months post-op. My weight is not entirely stable yet, so I expect some possible additional loss followed by a bounce back of 10-20 pounds, which I understand is common. When I told my surgeon I wanted to get down to a healthy BMI, he gave me the stats on average loss and how many people lose all their extra weight. And then he added, "But those are averages, some people lose more and some less. There's nothing stopping you from being one of those who loses a lot more than average." And that's how it worked out. So, you can be realistic and optimistic at the same time! Make the most of the surgery and see where you come out. Peterson says my ideal weight is 115, but I'm comfortable and happy at 121. I have occasionally dropped down to 119 and I didn't like how I looked at all. Edited April 15, 2021 by Jaelzion 1 Baba Raba reacted to this
blackcatsandbaddecisions 852 Posted April 16, 2021 Peterson calculator says I should be 154 lbs as a 5’10 woman. I’ve been there before, and it was pretty great. I set my goal weight at 165 but let’s see how it gets when I get closer.
