Eating out after surgery

Recommended Posts

I was going to restaurants/bars starting at 3 weeks post op. At first I just had Water, then I started to just share (or steal) food from my meal companions. After a while, I didn't want to be restricted to what my companions were eating so would just order an appetizer myself (or entree if nothing interested me on the appetizer menu). If no one at the table wanted to eat what I couldn't finish, then I'd just ask to get it packed up to bring home (or leave it there if it wasn't worth eating further).

Yes, servers would often be concerned if there was plenty of food untouched, which got annoying, but nothing that a "Yes, it was fine" wouldn't put an end to. I didn't feel the need to explain further.

Edited to add: I just remembered I used to bring Protein powders everywhere I went during the first couple months. I'd add it to my water.

In addition to what others have said about what to say if a waiter is concerned (which in my experience going with my friend who had had WLS wasn't too common), you can say, "I ate a late lunch" or "I have a headache" or "I have a toothache" or any number of white lies that strike your fancy.

I know many people choose to keep this surgery private from family and friends (and I probably wouldn't tell a waiter because that puts them in an awkward position), but I love @ms.sss's suggestion of using your dining companions as your disposal mechanisms (provided they don't have their own issues with food). I am usually going to be eating out alone as I will be on the road for work, so I plan to use the white lie strategy.

My hospital gave me a card stating that I had had gastric sleeve surgery and to allow me to order order reduced portions or from the kids menu. I'm curious if anyone else received something similar and if they have used it. Not that I'm thinking of eating out ANYTIME soon but I was just curious.
Idk if south FL hospitals give that card but you can always order whatever u want and ask for a box and app plate at same time, serve yourself on app plate and pack up the rest, once ur home- prep a few more meals in tupperware with the leftovers [emoji177]

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
