Pre-op Weight loss (Liquid Diet)

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I've been lurking on this board for the past week or so, but this is my first actual post.

I'm almost through the first week of my 2-week pre-op liquid diet. While I'm not necessarily hungry, I definitely want food. Actual solids. Never thought I would look forward to cottage cheese so much....

Anyway - I don't seem to be losing much on the liquid diet, which surprised me. 4 pounds in 4 days. On any other diet that would be GREAT, but lordy - on 1000 calories or less a day it doesnt seem like much. While I know there is no "normal" for this thing, I was just wondering what other people have experienced.

Thanks in advance!

I lost 10 pounds in 10 days on my pre-op diet. Calories were 800ish.

I lost 14 pounds in 16 days. Mine was a two week liver shrinking diet and two days of liquid. Mine didn’t have specific calories but I’d bet it was around 1000 or less.

My pre op diet was not liquid until the day before. It seems like there is no set diet doctors go by. Even post op I read people on puree and soft at different stages. I just go by what doc says

Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Mine will not be liquid either, but high Protein and no added sugar, no starch, no fruit, very low fat... roughly 800 kcal/day. For the last meal, I can eat 3 oz dry pastas ("to replenish glycogen storage")

The variety of pre-op diets people have is so interesting to me. I wonder why doctors choose one over the other.

I would kill for some solid food these days. My surgery is in a week and I swear I'm fantasizing about the purée stage. Never thought I would say that.... ha!

I'm on day 3 and I'm craving for something solid. I saw others were allowed to eat raw lettuce, raw cauliflower and broccoli. I'm going to ask my surgeon if this is allowed because that sounds tasty now lol.

I was also allowed dill pickles. Maybe you can have those as well.

I am 5 days into my 2 week Pre Op diet. I am on the new Directions plan per my surgeon. The shakes are sugary which is not appealing to me. I am more of a savory/salt type of eater. The shakes do keep me full which is good. But, not pleasant. I am counting the days until my surgery on April 22nd.

I am on day 3 of the pre-op diet, eating fewer than 700 calories a day, fewer than 25 carbs. I have mainly used Premier Protein because I have been out of town. I have not cheated, and I have only lost 2 pounds. Yet I weigh 273 lbs. Shouls I be disappointed?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
