Lots of pain after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery this morning and I've been in load of pain ever since. Not gas pain, that seems manageable, but from the incisions. I can barely even walk, and the last time I tried I ended up throwing up, so now I'm not allowed to have anything by mouth. And they told her not to walk much today, just let everything rest and heal and walk tomorrow. They gave me morphine and it only took away about half of my pain.

This seems to be the opposite experience of what I read about most times. Most people say their incisions barely hurt at all. I'm not really asking for advice or anything, that's what the doctors are for. Just kind of complaining and wondering if I'm the only unlucky one or there with this experience.

My incisions weren't that painful, but my abdomen itself was really sore. It was like all the muscles in my abdomen had gone through a massive workout. They gave me a binder to wear around my stomach and that helped a lot. However, everyone heals differently, best of luck to you!

Hello!

I am 11 days Post Op....and I thought the same as you. I woke up in a lot of pain in my abdomen...and under one incision in particular. I had morphine for the rest of that day along with nausea meds. I was nauseous from the pain more than anything. It just felt like my insides were being pulled apart....best way to describe it.

The next day I was given codeine and tylenol....and I actually found that managed my pain better. I think the key thing is...the pain meds will get you to a comfortable level, but not take it all away. I believe in the end mine was mostly gas pain. It settled in the middle of my abdomen...and it didn't matter how many rounds I made around the hospital unit...it didn't move (A lot of people say it moves to a shoulder or back...mine stayed put!). The third day was a turn around as I spend the whole day....ummm...expelling that gas....but I felt so much better after that.

I think it's just a waiting game at this point. Just try and get as comfortable as you can and try and rest up. *hugs*

I think this might be me. I've had no shoulder or back pain at all. It's all been in my abdomen. I went in a few walks the first day and I burped a lot (until I threw up and they had me stop walking and just rest). It's the second day and I'm feeling a lot better. Gone on two walks so far and I feel like I did a hundred crunches yesterday, but it's not the overwhelming pain I felt the first day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
