Lorey_a 19 Posted April 7, 2021 Has anyone continued on their dose of Metformin after surgery if you had Diabetes 2? My doctor initially told me to cut it in half to 500MG twice a day as I was on 1000MG twice a day before surgery. In the hospital they kept checking my blood sugar and only administered insulin 1 time. When they discharged me they said I did not need to continue anyting but that came from the discharge nurse. Issue with that is I was in ICU and did minimal sipping of mostly Water and a little chicken broth. Now I am drinking Protein Shakes and starting to mix in veggies and fruits into these drinks so I would think that will change the dynamic a bit. Can't speak with my doctor for a couple days now so was wondering what everyone else is doing with Metformin/Insulin as I think I am going to go back to the dosage twice a day but cut it down to 500 MGM until I have my blood formally tested in the next 30 days. NaturalMom 3 Posted April 21, 2021 I was told to continue taking it, but I just couldn’t stomach it after surgery. The pills are so big and crushing them didn’t help me take them, so I quit taking them. My T2 wasn’t severe, I was just diagnosed during the preop testing and while my fasting was high, my A1C was right on the line. When I went to my 2 week appointment I told my surgeon I quit taking it and he said that was fine, I probably didn’t have it anymore. I have tested a couple times in the morning just to make sure and both times my BG has been around 80. If I were you, I’d test in the morning and maybe again 2 hours after eating lunch and see if you stay in a non-diabetic range.
Mark1107 37 Posted July 15, 2021 About a year after surgery my hunger returned with a vengeance. I gained 8lbs and started back on Metformin 2xa day 500mg and my weight stabilized and I lost my appetite. I’ve maintained about 199-204 for a year now. I highly recommend recommend it. blackpowder72 23 Posted July 15, 2021 (edited) I'm 6 weeks post op. When they sent me home they told me I wouldn't need metformin. Well after the first week my sugar would not go down. Got back on it sugar went down. Got to a point my sugar was to low . Started weening myself off of it. Now I'm down to half of what I was taking before and my sugar levels haven't been this low in years ! Also am totally off my blood pressure meds . 6904rp 0 Posted July 16, 2021 If stick to low carb, high Protein diet, no need for metformin. I stopped day of surgery . 9 months later still no tabs .
Greendragonfly 110 Posted July 20, 2021 I am 2 months post surgery today. The day before surgery I stopped taking all of my diabetes medication which consisted of metformin, glimiperide, Ozempic and tresiba. I have not taken ANY of them since surgery and my A1c is down from 6.7 to 6.3. My hope is with continued weight loss my A1c will go even lower. My diet is high Protein low carb about 600-800 calories per day. I feel better than I have in years.
