Postoperative issues with WLS

Recommended Posts

I had a stricture at four weeks out and again at eight weeks out, but those are a minor issue and an easy fix. Otherwise.....???? Nothing I can think of. I'm really glad I did it and wish I would have done it years ago.

Transfer addictions are a consideration.
Some minor ones are just very expensive hobbies you always wanted to do (the serious ones can be alcohol etc)

You may become fixated on new clothes, specialty equipment or even eyelash extensions 🤫

I was not anticipating not being able to drink or eat pretty much ... I understood it would absolutely be less portions but I cant keep down anything past like 2 bites! The nausea and vomiting issues have become intolerable at week 12 post op. The feeling of bleakness as a result is becoming overwhelming.

I'd call your clinic if you haven't already, That doesn't sound normal for 12 weeks out.

My pre existing tendencies for low blood pressure & hypoglycaemia occur more often. The low blood pressure drops which used to occur a couple of times a month now happen a few times a day. The hypoglycaemia used to happen a couple of times a year now about once a month but I have better control over that now.

Sometimes i find it hard to find clothes that fit - they’re often a size or two too big. Reverse of what I used to experience. In Australia size 8 or XS is usually the smallest size stocked but I need an Australian size 4 or 6 or XXS. If they do have a size 6, I usually need the 4. It happened again with three things I tried on today - their smallest size is too big. Shopping online is frustrating cause I don’t know what size I’ll need.

yes i have been telling the office all about what i have been experiencing. each time they keep telling me everyone is different - be patient... and reiterate what to do. yesterday they finally offered something else to do. said to take prilosec and the anti-nausea medication each day. see if that helps and if not they will look into my gallbladder. so giving it another week yet again before i loose it more lol

I can think of a few "negative" side-effects from results of the WLS (i.e., weight loss), but really, none that would not be considered as mere skinny-girl problems by my old bigger self.

But...I do have one negative that came about due to the WLS itself, that needs legitimate addressing (probably for life): Nighttime Relfux. I never had it before, but since surgery, I need to make sure that I go to bed on an empty stomach, and that I have my head/upper body elevated when I'm asleep. If I don't, I will wake up with some stomach contents in my mouth sometime in the middle of the night which is wildly unpleasant.

I'm all good when I'm awake, and I know how to manage it with my sleeping arrangements, so its not that bad, but it is annoying.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
