Acid reflux AFTER Gastric bypass?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else experienced GERD after the Gastric bypass? I got the bypass after my sleeve was causing my stomach acid to burn lesions in my esophagus. A year has gone by, but for the last few months I have been getting really bad heartburn again. I'm getting an endoscopy next week, but I can't seem to find anything about what this could be. The ironic thing, is that I was a smoker for years, but NOW I don't smoke and rarely drink, but my acid feels worse than when I was smoking etc. This happens if I eat or not, when I wake up sometimes, I can't seem to pinpoint a reason. Please let me know if anyone else has been through this.

you can - but it's not common. For most people, bypass improves if not outright cures GERD - but unfortunately, there are a few that it doesn't work for.

I'm sorry that you are having this issue.

My SIL has the sleeve, and she has had horrible issues with reflux. She never had it before even with her 3 pregnancies.

Before my surgery I had untreated Gerd for 9 years, they discovered it during the waiting period and put me on pepcid. It changed my life!

He even went in and had to repair a 2 or 3cm intrusion in my stomach BEFORE doing my RNY.

Well everything went great for 6 months, the GERD didn't return- but the loud, explosive (TMI) belching did. So I went back on pepcid and I take it daily.

I have heard that RNY has helped several people but for me, it has reduced the acid greatly but NOT eliminated it completely.

Good luck

I had mild reflux before bypass. Then a year after surgery I began to have what I thought was reflux again. It was almost like I heard not felt bubbling. Like carbonation when I hadn't eaten or drank anything. I switched surgeons for annual follow up and the new surgeon took a contrast x-ray and saw that I have a candy cane or hockey stick off of the pouch and that my pouch had stretched or at least was bigger than the normal despite me never eating more than a half cup of food in one sitting and feeling a lot of restriction. . I think when food or salvia goes into the candy cane and then moves into the pouch it creates that feeling. The new surgeon said some people will have reflux after surgery and I had never heard that from the first surgeon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
