It was such a relief to get rid of mine! I had a repeat sleep study at 5 months post op and had zero apneic episodes so was able to turn the machine back in.

Well I am only a little over 5 weeks out...so I have that to look forward to. How much had you lost at 5 months? Was that second sleep study covered by insurance?

I had the pressure on mine lowered but I suspect I will never get rid of it.

My RNY Surgeon said I had pretty severe sleep apnea during the surgery. About a year later when I got to the sleep study, they hooked me up and I was just laying there for 45 minutes when they declared the study was done and I have severe sleep apnea! When I told them I never got to sleep, then began the additional tests and history. I have Central Apnea which is a brain malfunction. It results in pretty severe sleep apnea and less severe apnea when I'm awake.

I tried a CPAP with different cannulas but simply couldn't tolerate it. I live with it.

I’d lost 56 lbs at that time. Yes, my insurance covered the repeat sleep study.

I don't expect I will get rid of my sleep apnea as I snored even before I was really heavy. I didn't want to admit it, but I'm sure even then, it was sleep apnea and not just snoring. I finally sought treatment for it about 4 years ago. It made a huge difference in my quality of sleep and overall well-being. I thought I would have an extremely difficult adjusting to sleeping with the mask. Through trial and error, I found one that works perfectly for me. It turned out not what I expected I would like best. I'm down a total of 110 lbs. from my highest weight, with 65 of that since surgery in December. I didn't notice any difference in apnea after losing the first 50. After the losing the next 35, I contacted the provider with my updated weight-loss info and described the changes in how I thought I was breathing with the machine. She was able to run my statistics remotely just like they do when the monitor for usage and compliance. It shows up on my myChart as a sleep study. The pressure was lowered after that.

I am currently working to get a new sleep study and have been waiting for the company performing it to get it approved. After losing 110lbs I have noticed that my sleep has degraded and I spoke with my PCP yesterday and he told me to try not sleeping with my cpap machine to see if that improves my sleep. My theory that he agrees with is that because I might not need the machine now that it is pushing air it doesn't and is causing my sleep to be worse than it otherwise should be.

I hope that if I lose 100 lbs I can get off this blasted thing!

Mswillis5–I think you described it well. My machine was pushing more air than I needed. But I still need some air.

I got a CPAP before surgery, I hate it!!! The sleep doctor said I had mild sleep apnea and if I lost 10% of my body weight, he expected I would no longer need it. I lost 15% of my body weight pre-surgery, took the CPAP with me to the hospital for surgery, and haven’t taken it out since I’ve been home.

Same here. My Apnea was mild and developed after I got over 230. I'm under 230 and happily my husband says he hasn't heard me snore in weeks. My machine is gathering dust, hopefully I'll be down enough to redo my sleep study in a couple months and make it official that I am apnea free.

Congratulations! Isn’t awesome being CPAP free! I am so thankful.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
