Hi! I’m self pay - going to Mexico for a VSG on 5/6. Getting closer!

I'm self pay too and going to Mexico also for a VSG. My date is 5/10! This is my first post on this forum but have been reading for a few weeks since I scheduled. It's been such a lifeline! This time next year, our lives are going to be so much better - emotionally and physically!

I'm scheduled for 5/12. I'm self pay as well but through my local hospital group. I just scheduled everything yesterday and it's really starting to set it in that it's only 5 weeks away, 3 weeks until I need to start my pre-op diet.

I’m starting to get nervous as well, it feels so much more real now that’s scheduled. I’m 5’5” and 270 also and I’ll be a week behind you in surgery. Here’s to all of us doing well!

I’m not in the nervous phase yet. I had. C-section in 2009 but was awake for that. I am mostly freaked out by anesthesia. I don’t want a bad reaction. I am also dreading the inevitable loose skin. I have plans for a Tummy Tuck and possible a breast lift. Waiting for those things will be tough!

I had a C-section in 2019 so I’m not terribly worried about the incisions either. It’s mostly the anesthesia, honestly I’d rather have surgery awake if that was an option. And I’m worried about recovering with a toddler at home and generally just feeling well and doing well afterwards. I really don’t want to fail. I don’t care much about the idea of loose skin now but maybe that’ll change when it’s a reality.

I’m not entirely certain I will care all that much about the loose skin. It depends on if it causes discomfort. Mostly I am just happy to have the opportunity to have a fresh start. I have been reading in Facebook groups all kinds of people wanting to know when they can eat junk food again. I just can’t imagine, I honestly hate food and what it has done to me. Zero interest in going back!

My surgery is 5/5. I'm excited but I am concerned about the possibility of loose skin. Im afraid that after all the pain and hard work that I will still be disgusted by my body. I'm going to take one step at a time and it's nice to know that there are people going through the same things I am.

Hi,

I'm new here and I am scheduled for 05/10. I live in Northern Nevada and will have the procedure here. I am excited but I do agree it is more real now that it is scheduled.

I was actually scheduled for 05/24/2017, but the day before, while I was at the hospital doing pre-op, the insurance calledy dr and denied the surgery. To say I was devastated is an understatement. I decided then to self pay and have been saving for four years. Now, I am ready.

I have been prepping by walking 30-35 minutes for day, working on eating better, talking with my therapist on TalkSpace, and reading, reading, reading.

I am 5'4" and weigh 230. I am having the occasional anxious thought but tell myself that this is what I want, will have less pain (back, hips, knees, and ankles), feel better and be healthier. I am also working with my therapist to manage these anxious moments.

Jennifer

Sounds like you got this! I have heard so many stories about insurance pulling the approval just before surgery. My insurance states that it covers VSG but our employer specifically excludes it which never makes sense to me because they cover dieticians, obesity medications and diabetic supplies. It’s so backwards!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
