Hi, Im getting banded on December 11th. My Dr. has suggested I follow the clear liquid diet that Ive been on for the past 10 days, for about 4 weeks after the surgery. This is including the Protein shakes....

My question is..how do you get your protein in, (my dr wants 60g/day) from the shakes, if all you can drink is an ounce or two at a time?

how do you get your shakes in when you cant drink as much?

Honestly, for the first 9 days post-op I didn't have any protien shakes. Every one that I tried mad me sick, even the fruity flavored test-tube shots of protien. For some reason they frothed back up.

I did manage to get in Water, homemade chicken broth and sugar free popsicles. But it was very slow going. I was very swollen and it would take me 25 minutes to eat a sugar free icee pop (the ones in the plastic sleeve). I spent every awake moment drinking something.

Slow and easy wins the race when it comes to post-op fluids.

Check out Isopure clear Protein drinks. You can get them at some GNC's and places that sell items for body builders too. They are kool-aid-y (perfectly decent tasting) and come in about 7 flavors. Each bottle has 40 gm of Protein. Check the site for info....

In the first week after your surgery, your goal is to heal, so not to worry about the Protein for that first week, but I did try the Isopure post op and it was OK. So if you just drink those after surgery, you should be OK, good luck

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
