Can eating chicken skin cause a leak?

Recommended Posts

Today is my fourth week out and my NUT says that I am cleared for a regular diet as long as I can tolerate soft foods which I can. I told her that I ate a piece of baked chicken with the skin on it by mistake, as She says to stay away from the skin because it’s high in fat and calories. But is there any chance that I would get a leak because I ate the skin? I know I should probably ask my surgeon but I’d just like some input from anyone, because I’ve read that someone ate an apple and granola at three weeks out and it gave them a leak.

I don't think chicken skin would cause a leak...unless it was SUPER crispy (and really, not even then!) I think I had a KFC chicken breast at about 4 weeks, and while my stomach was upset, it didn't cause a leak!

How many weeks out are you? And does it give you any discomfort?

no - chicken skin wouldn't give you a leak. Plus you're probably beyond the leak stage at this point - those usually occur pretty quickly after surgery.

I was sleeved in beginning of July and by August I was walking an orchard for exercise and picking peaches n Apples by September 1 and I lived on them that was my favorite thing granted it took me two day to finish an apple but I never got a leek you just make sure you chew good n listen to your pouch it will tell you if it doesn’t like something. Trust me when it happens you won’t do it again lol

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
