To Eat Or Not To Eat...

Hi everyone! I wanted to clear up some stuff before I have my surgery. I have heard so many different remarks about what you can eat and not eat after the surgery. So here's a list of things I'm confused about. Let's hear what you have been told by your doctors.

  • Bread
  • Gum
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Caffeine
  • Pasta
  • Rice

And any other things that are remarkable. Thanks a bunch! :eek:

Most all of the doctors say no carbonation. Most of the other items depend on you. Many people have trouble with bread, some do better with toast. When it comes to rice, Pasta, etc it's all personal preference. I'm trying to follow the sugar busters diet as much as possible (my doctor also suggested this). So, I'm staying away from potatoes, rice, Pasta, sugar, and most things white. This has really helped with my weight loss.

What you really need to do, is ask your doctor. They all vary a little in what they want their patients to eat.

I dont drink carbonated beverages apart from once in a blue moon because I've never had a habit of drinking them. Softdrinks such as coke and fanta, god they're simply AWFUL for you and I just dont drink them, never have, wont let my kids have them either apart from very occasionally. And I'm phobic about artificial sweetener.

Everything else on that list I have quite regularly, well not really gum, I dont really think chewing all day is a good look, its disgusting when people talk to you with gum in their mouths. I avoid it unless I have a bad taste in my mouth.

bread, rice, Pasta yes I eat those. I dont believe in really low carb diets but I have reduced my dependence on those foods, they're occasional foods for me. Bread is just hard, although I can eat it, and I dont really want it anymore. Pasta we'd eat about once a fortnight as a family and brown rice I might have 2 or 3 times a week.

I've done coffee from day one post-op--not sure why some doctors don't permit it (I read one today who said she can't have it for six months!!! OMG)

Rice and Pasta I'm careful with--while gum, carbonated beverages and bread I stay totally away from.

I have to tell you: By the time you eat your Protein first, you don't have much room left for ANYTHING ELSE! You'll only be able to eat 1/4 to 1/2 cup for each meal--so you make the very best of every meal, protein-wise! :eek:

I was not specifically told NOT to have any of that stuff. It was recommended to stay away from caffeine or carbonation - I'm okay with the reasons behind that. I was told that some people have trouble with bread. Basically, I can try anything as long as I take it slow when I introduce it back into my diet. I have eaten rice. It's so small, I didn't have any trouble with it at all. Of course, it was cooked in the slow cooker for a Soup, so it was puffier and softer than rice you might make in just a pan. But as always - follow what your doctor says. ;)

I was told carbonation could really cause my band tummy problems. I tried it later on and I would sip then burp, sip and burp. Not worth it.

bread if gooey (like yeast rolls) could get gummed up. I don' t want to take the chance. I toast or eat the crusty part of roll.

Rice and Pasta has never been a problem for me.

When you are at the point in you food guideline to start eating anything but bandster size portions, you must try SLOWLY and see how it goes.

after i was on solids, my surgeon said try whatever i want to eat, take it very slowly and if i have problems stop.

the only problem i have is with very dough-y bread. rice sometimes depending on my restriction level that day, but i normally know how tight i am.

the really funny thing is, i used to be a massive diet cherry coke drinker, now i have no desire for it. every once in awhile, i will get one, take a few sips and be like 'ehhh... no biggie'. i have to be careful though because of the carbonation, it tends to stay in the pouch and i then have gas pains a bit.

I had the same dr as losingjusme. He told me the same...try everything and see what you can or can't handle. so far, I can eat anything.

He even said that its ok to drink carbonated beverages, as long as its on an empty stomach. I was so addicted to diet sprite...drank it as a child, so for 20 years I drank it every day. I haven't touched it since surgery and I must admit I feel better!

  • Bread - yes, but not much of it.
  • Gum - yes, but I don't chew gum very often
  • Carbonated beverages - yes, but rarely because it can bug my stomach
  • Caffeine - yes, every day.
  • Pasta - yes, but can't eat much at once.

  • Caffeine - no, my nutritionist says it causes you to get hungry faster (I have never heard of this, but I listened, just to be on the safe side)
  • Pasta - occasionally
  • Rice - occasionally

What my nurse at Sydney Obesity Clinic told me was:

bread - yes, not the fresh dough kind as that can gum up. But toasted is fine.

Gum - Don't know, she didn't say anything and I didn't ask as I don't chew it.

Carbonated beverages I've been told is a no as the gases can cause your band to shift.

Caffeine yes, as I'm told coffee if fine.

Pasta - yes, but depends on the person. Some can eat it some can't.

Rice - same with Pasta. But be careful as it can sometimes expand in your stomach.

Edit: now that I have been back on solids for a while. Rice for me is a no no. Carbonated beverages if I let them go somewhat flat are fine. And pasta, is ok too. Just keep in mind to chew, and eat slowly. Sometimes still I forget then feel like an Alien chest burster from Aliens is trying to get out.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
