Lahela 84 Posted March 27, 2021 I had Gastric Bypass on 3/25/2021. I came home yesterday evening. I was shocked at the amount of post op meds I have to take and some are for over 90 days! The most daunting med is the shot to prevent blood clots. Thank god for my loving and supportive hubby, he really came in clutch and offered to give me the shots (2x a day mind you). Anyone else blown away by having 9 post op meds added to existing meds and Vitamins?
Starwarsandcupcakes 2,070 Posted March 27, 2021 The only medications for me that were added were- pain medication, protonix, Vitamin b-12, and Iron for my post-op anemia. I didn’t have to do the heparin (to prevent blood clots) but do realize some surgeons prescribe them. 1 Lahela reacted to this
mil_unloaded 80 Posted March 27, 2021 (edited) The only med I had that was for 90 days post-op was urasidol (spelling?), to prevent gallstones. They want me to keep my gallbladder so they put me on that. I was also on omeprazole for 2 months. I also take the program Vitamins (now I’m on a Multivitamin and Calcium chewable). Every case can vary, and likely you won’t be on all of those meds forever. I’m almost done with the urasidol! Also for my own mental sake I’ve been taking a stool softener because I got super constipated once and really hurt my hemorrhoid—I couldn’t even sit down for two days. edit: typo Edited March 27, 2021 by mil_unloaded
catwoman7 11,220 Posted March 27, 2021 the only things I had (besides the vitamins) were for omaprazole (which I had to take for a year - but that was several years ago before they knew about the risks - I think most surgeons just prescribe it for 3-6 months now), ursodiol (I think I had to take this for 3-6 months - it minimizes the risk of gall bladder issues), and pain pills, which I didn't even bother opening because I wasn't in pain. some people have to take the heparin shots, but I think they're in the minority. I think they gave them to me in the hospital, but once i got home, no. A few surgeons have patients continue them at home, though.
Maisey 260 Posted March 27, 2021 I also had to take those shots due to a family history of blood clots. They were bad but they eventually end.
