I’m almost 4 weeks post op and I have been introducing foods back into my system slowly and gradually. So far I have not had any issues besides getting full really quick but that is what’s expected. I still don’t have any hunger so eating is kind of like a chore lol. I wanted to know if Protein Bars are ok because I am still struggling to get in all my Protein and I can’t eat that much and the shakes just don’t do it for me , I hate them. I know I should ask my nutritionist but first I wanted to hear from you. Thanks.

Have you tried flavorless Protein Powder and slipping it in your foods/drinks? I know the nutritionist talked to me about that in preparation as a back up plan in case I found myself disliking the shakes.

That’s a great idea I will try that !

I couldn’t tolerate Protein Shakes either & the so called flavourless Protein powder still had a taste for me. I turned to drinking yoghurt. Yopro was my favourite & I could get 22 or 30g of protein in depending upon the amount I drank so 1/3 - 1/2 of my protein daily goal. You can make your own by blending up your favourite yoghurt with milk.

Protein bars may be too heavy to eat this early on. I didn’t introduce them to my diet until I was in maintenance.

I think they're OK to have occasionally, but they're not the best choice. I think they're too much like candy bars and may get you headed in a not-so-great direction. I do often throw one in my purse if I'm going to be somewhere for a chunk of the day, and the food choices are likely to be sub-optimal (or non-existent...). I also pack some when I'm traveling. So yes - I do eat them occasionally and I think they're OK for that. But as a regular thing, there are better choices.

I eat Built Protein bars when I am on the go, or after a workout for a protein blast. While I do like the taste of them and they do have a candy bar-like texture, I do not find them to make me want to eat a real candy bar. They are a convenient fuel for my body. I am a bit of an exercise addict, and they are a go-to for me post workout. Unlike meat Proteins, I find I can eat them pretty fast and they are just the right size to be easy on my tummy.

With all of that said, it is always a good idea to check with your nutritionist. I also could not stand the taste of Protein Shakes early on. Try mixing with different liquids to mask the taste. Good luck!

I don't buy Protein bars - they're packaged too much like chocolate/candy bars for me: I'd just either eat every one I had in the house or be desperate to eat them 🙄

I've found high protein yoghurt - greek yoghurt or skyr to be the most effective for getting in protein. I also use flavoured protein waters a lot (I use a Wow! brand).

Hey chanterelle! Everything is good I can’t believe we’re both almost two months post op! I’m feeling good, dropping the pounds I can see a lot of change so I’m happy about that. As far as food I am doing ok, still not meeting Protein or Water goals but I’m trying lol I feel great though no complaints. I’m eating about 500-700 calories a day , well 700 is a stretch but some days I get there lol how are you feeling????

I’m doing great I’m at a stall I lost 54 pounds after surgery and been at a stall for 2 weeks grrrr. I hit my Protein almost daily with chicken, Beans, nuts, and of course Protein Shakes. Water is becoming so easy to drink now think God but I’m not at 64oz yet more like 30-50 a day. Calories are 600-700 a day sometimes it’s less if I’m craving veggies. I’m thinking about going vegetarian when I’m in maintenance I’m starting to hate meat. I can no longer eat artificial sweeteners so I invested in Monk Fruit extract and drink water which is a bit boring. I’m trying to find a good gym. I am very thankful for God getting me through because there were times I was in so much pain and dehydrated. I regretted the surgery at one point because I couldn’t drink water but now it’s improving! How much have you lost since surgery? It’s good you haven’t hit a stall 😞

No girl I have hit stalls!!! I’ve had like two so far and they last for about 2 weeks it is super discouraging. Now i don’t step on the scale as much because I’m like what’s the point I know the weight will come off. I’m glad to hear you’re doing so well!!! And 54 lbs since surgery? Wow that’s a lot in less than 2 months. I’ve lost about 30 lbs since surgery, it’s slow but I’ve lost inches for sure I can see my body transforming back to normal lol

Yeah 54 but remember I had bowel obstruction I think that pulled the extra weight off. 30 pounds is amazing we haven’t even hit two months yet!

I do the Built Bars as well at 1 month out. My stomach handles them very well and the size/macros are a perfect meal for me. They don’t cause a binge trigger or anything of the sort for me, but I can see how they might for some. I would definitely experiment. Just make sure you’re choosing the right bars- there are a lot out there that are just glorified candy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
