It’s Happening (sorta)!!!

Recommended Posts

I met with my surgeon yesterday, went over everything, and we agreed on VGS. I was even able to do the pre-op chest XR while I was there at the hospital. Did two nutritional appointments today (I have to do 12). Feeling good! Luckily, I have had most of the other requirements, (the endoscopes, sleep study, bloodwork, elf, etc.) by coincidence done in the last few months. Psych eval is 4/16. The ball is rolling!! But......... I won’t be having my surgery until August-ish. I discussed with the surgeon my schedule (full time school, full time job, 3 kids, and hubby is in school also, planned vacation in July) and he said to wait, go on vacation, relax, get lots of sun, and then I will be in a good mental state for surgery when I get back versus trying to cram a surgery/healing in there. Plus, I have a school break from beginning of September through the new year (when I start nursing clinicals)... It feels kind of surreal- like it’s actually going to happen. Yay!!

I lurk this platform daily and it’s so inspiring to read all the positive stories. I think the time will go by quickly.

Good news! Plus... you'll see the nursing side from the patient POV and I bet that will only make you a better nurse! Good luck!

Congrats! I had my initial consultation 2 weeks ago and have scheduled my medical clearance appointments for the end of April and hoping to have surgery over the summer too. I'm leaning towards the gastric sleeve too. Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
