Any Tips for Buying a Food Scale and other supplies?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm having surgery in early April. I'm on Amazon looking at food scales. Any tips for a good type of scale? I see some that have bowls attached. Not sure which kind is more helpful.

Also. Were any other supplies helpful during the first few weeks of recovery? I don't want to spend money on a lot of stuff that I will only use a few times. But, I will be home alone recovering and do want supplies that will be worth the money.

Thanks!

I'm early in the process too and skeptical to buy too much before getting my date. But I did just recently purchase this and it's been fine for me. But I haven't had it long. Not too expensive either.

This one is pricey, but I use it all the time. The display pulls out which makes it very easy to use with plates, etc.

Not sure if they all do this but on mine you can use your own bowl or plate and set to zero on empty so it doesn’t count the weight of it. This is good if you want to use whatever dish you will be using anyways.

GreaterGoods Digital food Kitchen scale, Multifunction Scale Measures in Grams and Ounces (Ash Grey) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JTDG084/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XRXTFD5WF0380487ZCBN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I also did use a food chopper a couple times to purée eggs for egg salad and you can also make chicken salad and tuna salad but I wasn’t a huge fan of the consistency. My husband on the other hand liked the tuna better than way so idk (he had it in bread though so maybe that was the difference)

Hamilton Beach Mini 3-Cup Food Processor & Vegetable Chopper, 350 Watts, for Dicing, Mincing, and Puree, Black (72850) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y2GZWCJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5HMTMSECCG8D4VX2E5RD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

But the scale and the two ounce cups were all that I have really used. I also put a TV tray next to my bed because it’s easier to get to than my nightstand but I already had that in my craft room.

Small tupperware or glasslock containers! (to store all your leftovers/partially eaten food)

Insulated Water bottle! (to keep ur cold water cold or your hot water hot)

Another water bottle with one of those ball mixer thingees for your (powder) Protein shakes!

A timer (or use your watch or phone)! (to time your bites or remind you to eat/drink/walk around)

Fibre supplements! (to keep you regular...constipation sucks the bag)

oh, and a fancy shmancy body composition scale so you can monitor your muscle mass/body fat percentages and not just weight! (might not be your thing, but just thought I’f put it out there...)

Best of luck to you!! I’m nearly 4 months out, surgery was thee best decision I ever made. I hope yours is as successful and happy! I bought a food scale from Bed, Bath & Beyond, they also honor 20% coupons, so a deal made me feel better. I didn’t spend more than $15 on it, it’s nothing fancy, but it does the job! I would definitely recommend one, you’ll use it to each meal after surgery! It’s a whole lifestyle change, and I pray yours is a great one! Please reach out with questions, I’ve met people who helped and listed for me and I’d like to pass the buck. 😁 I also purchased small 3-8oz containers for your meals. Then once you start cooking with the new diet, you’ll notice what things would be needed... just pace yourself, and the best of luck to you! 🥳 💪🏽

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the offer to answer questions. I have so many of course since I'm just starting. This site has been helpful, although people are all over the spectrum. Some say their experience was great and they have no regrets. Others report various challenges post-surgery. This makes me nervous, but I know that reflects any experience in life. Everyone has their own experience. Again, thanks so much!

Thank you. In addition to the small glass containers (not a fan of plastic), I think I will buy a few smaller bowls and plates.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
