Substance use after WLS

Recommended Posts

So I have an incredibly controversial and rather personal question for the lovely people of BariatricPal. I’ll be upfront, I’m a 20 year old guy in college so pre-op I was a party animal. My question doesn’t relate to alcohol but to illicit-drug use.. I understand this is a super touchy subject but is there anyone that would be willing to share how they get felt or reacted to the use of illicit drugs (molly, snow, bars etc.)

Oh man. This is so what I want to avoid. I posted earlier about how easy it would be to pick up my old self destructive habits. Mainly any of the ones that make you not feel hungry anymore. I havent tried it but the temptation is real. I wouldn't try it because it could turn into a coping mechanism instead of a weekend party time thing and then it's never any fun again as you forget how to function and digest food normally without it. Your tolerance is going to be super super low and just a fraction of what you used to do could possibly be fatal. The risks just dont seem worth it. Be careful with whatever you choose to do or not do.

Most of us ending up with wls have an eating addiction, and likely an addictive personality in many areas. Transfer addiction is real. Watch out for anything in your life that your brain is trying to use to cope (drinking, drugs, shopping, gambling) because new things can crop up once you take away food.

I appreciate all the responses and certainly appreciate the concern. I just wanted to hear about reactions I’m walking away from that party life but I know shit happens and it’s bound to happen once or twice so i just wanna be prepped

Hi! I've been operated 3 days ago, and I'm ex heroine addicted (I'm using methadone for cravings and heal my addiction) and other substances, I think that some can create serious problems to the stomach, like mdma because most of all are made with too basic or too acid ingredients, and this can cause ulcer, and hemorrhage . I remember when I was smoking crack and having bad stomach pain sometimes. I suggest you to don't use any kind of drugs in general, but if you want have more information about it, you can ask to substance's doctor like I did before getting operated!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
