I ate a whole burrito

Recommended Posts

I overdid it tonight at dinner and for the first time since my surgery exactly 8 weeks ago. I ate an entire 330 calorie (50 carbs, 12 Protein and 10 fat) burrito tonight. I was expecting to eat half but since I never felt the full feeling I usually get, I kept eating.

Several things are wrong with this but mostly I’m bothered I kept eating because I wasn’t forced to stop

How did my pouch handle that intake without me getting terribly sick?

My overeating is still right there and rears its ugly head!

Wow, I would have got sick if I did that. I am also so afraid to over eat. Even if I am still hungry, I make myself stop eating. Were you eating for the taste? Were you super hungry that day? Just curious to see the why behind it.

I ate because I still like to eat and was pushing boundaries.... so, I think I learned my lesson to stop even if I don’t get the stuffed feeling.

Ok, so at least you know why you did it. I love to eat also, but after the surgery I find that I can not eat even 1/4 of what I used to eat before. You will learn to stop, even when you don't feel full. I did it, and so can you. I eat a lot slower now. It sucks because my food often gets cold. I sometimes have to reheat in the microwave. You will get used of how your body feels. It takes time. Be patient with yourself.

Being patient with myself is my biggest obstacle right now. I’m 8 weeks out and expect to be an expert and expect my old habits to not come up. Good thing I’m seeing a food disorder therapist 😉

Hi Amy,

First off don't beat yourself up. There's a very real possibility your body seriously needed some nutrition. Secondly, the main function of bypass surgeries isn't the smaller stomach. It's the bypass and the metabolic effects it has on your body's "optimal weight set point". The pouch helps, but it's not the main thing. That's for the sleevers.

In treatment for binge eating disorder, they go through three phases:

- First off: are you hungry? Can't conquer the overeating if you're hungry. Restriction beyond what you should be doing at this point leads to overeating. I'm wondering if you're at one of those 500 cals/day programs. It may be too little, but ask your program if so.

- Secondly, habits: did you give yourself pause to make a choice? Sometimes, our weird relationship to food drives us to do everything so fast. As in "if I don't eat the whole burrito now, my "better-knowing-self" will tell me to stop, so better gulp it down". That's where it can be great to find a third way between "eat little" and "overeat", which is 'I think I'll eat half of this, but after half of it, I'll take a moment and see if I'd like - or need - more'

- Finally, how did you feel last night? Was something bothering you that made you want to overeat? Maybe interesting to take a look at that.

Hugs.

You are so wonderfully generous with your insight and words. It means a lot. I’m at 600 calories a day now and I’ve recently recognized that 40 gr of carbs a day is probably too little. I’m dragging a bit even with 70 gr of Protein, Water and everything else I’m doing. So, I was hungry that night and I was with my mom so that combination is dangerous (serious and kidding). Pausing is the key and man, it only takes a few seconds, so I need to get into this habit. So much to learn and as mentioned to someone else it’s so good I’m seeing a good disorder therapist!

This is where discipline and measuring food is needed. Next time get the burrito... split it in half or thirds (depending on how big the burrito is) and remove the portions you do not intend to eat from your plate before you start eating. If at a restaurant... this may mean asking for a togo box WITH your meal. I always thought it was strange when A friend always did that when we went out to eat. Now I totally get it!

It was just beans.... so in the world of burritos it was pretty small and less filling than others.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
