Taking bigger sips without pain?

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Sabrena, I'm new here. I had the sleeve done on 2/25/21 so this coming thurs, I'll be 3 weeks post-op & down 29 pounds from date of surgery. The first two weeks used to hurt to sip on fluids especially if I sipped too much or just sipping on Protein Shakes which my nutritionist said was normal. Now, I'm able to take bigger sips (by accident) and noticed I have no pain at all doing so & able to chug down those 1oz cups without any problems in no time at all as well! Is that normal?? Also, I still cant get in the 800 calories they keep telling me I need to get in. I plate a half cup of pureed fish or chicken & 1/4 cup of puree veggies & can only get down half of it before my stomach cramps telling me nomore. So what do I do besides keep drinking my Protein shakes to get in atleast my protein? I dont want to do anything to hinder my weight loss

I have a special name for this phenomenon: Healing.

The swelling is going down making things less sensitive. You're having less pain because you've been careful to take small sips.

Keep doing what you are doing.

Good job!

Thank you Tek!,

I'm just so nervous about all of this. I hear different horror stories about how you can damage your stomach by over doing things. I had this one young lady tell me, I can undo it even by over drinking or taking big gulps before time & if I dont get in my right calorie intake that will make me put on weight. So, my nerves are all over the place with questions. Thank you, I appreciate your feedback!

We are surgery week sibs; I had my surgery just two days before you! I have noticed the same thing in the last week or so. I'm able to take nearly full-sized sips. It's made a big difference in me being able to get my fluids in during the day. I'm still on a full liquid diet (one more week to go) but I no longer have to count my shakes as Fluid since I can drink more in one sip. I do still need to pause between sips, no chugging for me, and a couple times I have gotten real wild and taken a really big sip that left me uncomfortable for a minute or so until I was able to get some air out.

Hey my surgery sib!! I started my full liquids on the 11th day up until the 15th day & then on the 15th day, i transitioned to pureed food & I will stay on this pureed stage until I hit 30 days which will be next thurs on the 25th I believe. I'm now able to drink without having to take any pauses in between like before but if I do take too big of a sip my stomach will cramp & it will feel like its caught right in my chest & takes a little minute before it actually goes down, same goes for as eating the pureed food...gotta take it really slow or you'll get that stuck feeling. I don't get much of that bc I can't get down much bc I get full so fast. I'm still learning as I go. I have heartburn pretty bad too, how about u? One of the hardest things for me still tho to this day is the Fluid amount they want us to get in. I still havent reached that 64 oz. The highest I've taken in has been maybe around 28-32 oz & on good days 38-40oz & that's including the Protein shakes!

I'm jelly of your pureed stage! My program does 4 weeks of full liquid then pureed stage for 3 weeks. I get to move stages next Wednesday - I've never been so excited for thinned down refried Beans, lol!

I just started being able to get in 64 (plus or minus a few) ounces in me, not counting shakes, about 4 days ago. Mind you, I am drinking from morning til night. I have been lucky not to have heartburn. My Dr. has me on omeprazole, so I'm not sure if that's saving me or if I am just dang lucky.

Some people can return to guzzling down Water. Water passes through your stomach quickly. I wouldn't be too worried about that. But are you still eating the proper portions for your stage? That is the more important question. How much food are you taking in will affect your success, whereas getting lots of water or other non-sugar fluids is just find.

I wish I had that problem though lol... 18 months out and I can still only take 6 sips max! LOL I literally have to carry a water bottle everywhere I go to be sure to get enough fluids in. What I am experiencing is normal... but so is what you are experiencing!

As for the food intake... it takes a while to get up to bariatric normal portions. Just eat what you can and keep communicating with our nutritionist/surgeon. They will let you know when to worry. Get your water and Protein in as best as you can... don't worry about anything else until your water and protein are where they are supposed to be.

Wow, they are advancing you slowly! I hit 4 weeks and they said I can start eating whatever I wanted as long as I could tolerate it lol. But... they advanced me a little faster than others. I think normal diet for my team is usually around 6 weeks. Hang in there!

Hi! I'm Brenda and I was sleeved on 2/25/21 also. My surgery went well and I felt like I was doing pretty good since being home. However, I need some advice! As I said, I thought I was doing pretty good until 2 days ago, when I got very light-headed in the shower and had to have help to get out. Once I cooled off, it passed, but after thinking about it, I realized that although I wasn't having pain eating (stage 3) and drinking, I was very low on the amount of Water and other fluids and food that I should be getting and figured that was what caused the episode. (I was trying to keep everything at 1/4 cup and only taking in every 2 hours) So, I forced myself to drink, drink, drink and eat probably twice as much that day as I had been and it did make me feel better.

Here's my concern: Yesterday and today, I have had burning type pain all over my midsection. I can eat and drink without vomiting, but there is some pain associated with it now and I don't want to do it much. I have no fever, my BP is good. I'm just sitting here in pain and wondering if I have really done something bad and hurt myself? (Like a rupture)

I do not have a PCP to contact and am having trouble finding a new one. So, I am reaching out here for advice. Does this sound like I have just over-done it and a little time will get me back on track or should I be more concerned about it?

Me too! I have 2 more weeks on full liquids before I progress to pureed diet, and I cannot believe how many times during the day I find myself thinking about egg salads, and pureed Beans :D

Just to put minds at ease my surgeon said you can't stretch your pouch with Water. I was able to drink a lot quite quickly. He told me not to, should practice on being more mindful but its not going to hurt your weight loss/do any damage.

As far as I can tell the sooner I drink water post eating the quicker I get hungrier, might be water pushing food out of system quicker?

I’ve found that I’m able to drink Water more efficiently if it’s slightly warm. Consider trying whether different temperatures make a difference when drinking?
Cold water messes with me everytime. I am able to sip room temp water so much easier than cold stuff.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
